Ardbeg Auriverdes
700ml 49.90%
Ardbeg Day 2014 Release It's all about football but the dram is highly intriguing. Fuller notes to follow...but in the meantime here's some official notes, "The casks are American white oak ex-Bourbon barrels, which were shipped over from the United States as per the norm. The insides of the barrels had therefore been charred in the traditional, Bourbon specification manner. From Caskstrength.com, "Nose: Hot, with some distinct Ardbeg smokiness (sweet cure bacon), alongside a little dry spiciness, a big waft of vanilla pipe tobacco, expresso coffee, a touch of ginger and an injection of some lighter citrus zest - fresh lemon and lime. It's powerful, but with a light touch alongside - think Didier Drogba... Palate: More classic Ardbeg fullness, the smoke turning a little more medicinal, with greener notes (fresh orchard fruit) and something a little more savoury - sweet potato perhaps? There is a youthful zestiness at play too but the mouthfeel is superb, with more smoked meat, vanilla and a candied sweetness - the 10 year old is a good reference point, but it has a little more depth alongside. Finish: Surprisingly dry, with a lingering oaky spice, some sooty residue and a last-gasp citrus bite."

Bruichladdich The Classic Laddie Scottish Barley Unpeated
700ml 50.00%
All American, little to no peat and some would say a return to traditional value. From All Things Whisky, "Palate: Some nice heat on arrival. Barley sugar sweetness up front. A nice candied fruit follows. Grassy Sauvignon Blanc tones. A very slight (but very nice) fuel note that dissipates with time in the glass. Still getting some orange. A touch of pepper. Toothpick and apple skin. Quite drying. None too complex, but doesn’t need to be."

Bunnahabhain 12yo
700ml 46.30%
The Bunny 12yo to me is a true classic, lots of big malty flavours, the big luxuriant spirit is still there but now there’s a hint of the fresh sea air that works really well with the sweet oakey vanilla, quite appetising.

Kilkerran Work In Progress 2 6yo
700ml 46.00%
The feints of the 1st edition have gone and now this malt is starting to blossom. The length and zestiness bordering on salty of this mat is amazing and do like the crisp maltiness mid palate. Can't wait for the next one! From the distillery, "Nose: Light and fragrant, the nose leads you into the dram gently. Refreshing lemon citrus, hints of pear and just a dash of sherbet. Palate: Masses of sweet vanilla immediately take over the taste buds before the classic Campbeltown salt hits the tongue. Creamy toffee and butterscotch become apparent as the natural oils coat the mouth. Finish: gentle smoke comes from deep in the throat followed up by very pleasant ground spices".

Springbank 12yo Green
700ml 46.00%
Brand new for the Summer of 2015 and it looks like being a Springbank series as well. Why green? Because the barley is organic. Fully matured in ex bourbon barrel. These notes come from the crew at Cadenheads, " Nose: Some citrus and spice lead the charge of aromas with the soft coastal nose we know and love with Springbank, The arrival of a oat cake and honey note infused with coconut and vanilla pod. Palate: Here comes a real roller-coaster of flavours ranging from light sweet citrus fruits, soft sweet smoke slips in for an appearance before a rich honey and oak note arrives along with breakfast cereal notes. Warming with a little sweet spice to lift the middle palate rather nicely. Finish: Classic Campbeltown with the smoke and very soft sweet peat edges, summer coastal walk with the iodine in the air, banana maybe with the soft fruitiness becoming more evident the longer it's left in the glass."

Springbank 18yo
700ml 46.00%
Medium to full bodied style, matured in both ex sherry (80%) and ex bourbon casks. Only 7800 bottles produced and now generally in short supply worldwide! This malt is all about precision & refinement...nothing is out of place: from the restrained nose of fruit cake with marzipan and a hint of pine smoke to the very long, lightly peated, crisply malty & fruity palate & dry smokey finish, this malt hums. And keeps on humming for quite some time. Tasting notes from the distillery as well: Nose: Full of authority. Rich and creamy at first, the nose develops to reveal vanilla, ripe fruits and marzipan before hints of sherbet, almonds and strawberries tempt you onwards to the first mouthful. Palate: A classic full-bodied dram. Thick and oily in texture with an extremely fruity and mellow taste which gives way to a sweet liquorice and aniseed flavour as it opens up. Hints of liquorice and aniseed. Finish: Sweet and chocolaty with some coconut, the finish is long and consistent with a pleasant smokey tingle.

Glenfarclas 25yo
700ml 43.00%
Another classic sherry monster from the good folks at Glenfarclas. In their words, "Nose: Complex, yet refined, delicately peated, with fresh tempting aromas of marmalade, honey, freshly ground coffee, sherry and nuts. Some oaky tannins. Flavour: Full-bodied and robust, the sherry and the oak fight for your attention yet neither is overpowering. A powerful nutty smokiness. Finish: Intense, long lasting, dry smoky and malty. A beautiful dark Belgium chocolate taste at the back of your mouth to complete the flavour of the 25 Years Old. Comment: A great after-dinner whisky so rich and full that it is a dessert in itself, with a finish that goes on forever. " July 2105 notes from the Big G, "Old school, yet spicy and bright. Massively long and wide palate."

Glenlivet 15yo Single Cask Edition Morinsh
700ml 56.30%
Well, wonders never cease! I normally have little to do with the whiskies of George & JG Smith, but a limited edition of 270 bottles (those so well used words) did catch my attention, mainly because it is at cask strength. From WhiskyNick, it appears that this dram is an exclusive bottling for an Aussie retailer, it’s all bourbon oak, to which he describes it as classic Glenlivet at full strength. I thought “classic Glenlivet” had a tad of sherry oak in it. I have heard described as, “bold, honey and ripe pears, rich, luxurious dark chocolate and sweet ginger flavours.” Sounds like a sherry cask to me. . My notes to follow shortly.

Deanston 18yo
700ml 46.30%
Wonders never cease! A couple of years back I would not have given you tuppence for the stuff that was coming out of Deanston. Then with new owners, a tasting in Adelaide and meeting the distiller changed my opinion completely. Finally the distillery worked out how to produce a decent and classy whisky. So I was quite excited when this turned up...an aged Deanston! Double distilled, matured in ex bourbon hoggies then top dressed infirst fill bourbon oak and bottled at 46.3% alc. As one retailer put it, "The result is classic, pure, and outstanding. Rich vanilla and malted barley make up the core constituents of flavor, a creamy and supple mouthfeel adds to that delight, and the finish is loaded with oiliness and a lip-smacking note of honey and citrus."

Oban 14yo
700ml 43.00%
One of Diageo's "classic" malts, very perfumed, fruity and mildly spicy malt with just a hint of peat. Buxton's 101.

Old Pulteney 12yo
700ml 40.00%
A beaut introduction to this classic salty, seaside malt. Sheery influenced and rated as one of the Ten Best Scotch Whiskies by Charles MacLean for the Independent newspapaer in 2009! "An elegant malt from Wick...this has a lighlty maritime charachter and goes well with fish and seafood". Well said Mr MacLean.

Bakery Hill 2008 8yo A Wisp Of Smoke Cask 106 Peated Malt
500ml 51.70%
Well, well, well! This is a first for me!! A special, single cask release from that ever reliable and ever Mr Consistent, David Baker. When he called me up, I think he was chasing payment, he casually mention that he's finally bit the bullet and has brought out something special. It's a called, "A Wisp Of Smoke" and essentially it is a single cask rendition of his fab peated cask strength malt. And the taste? A beautiful nose of balanced creamy oak, malt and spirit. And dare I say, with just, "A Wisp Of Smoke". On the palate: Long, lingering, almost like a rapier down the palate. Classic maltiness, beautiful, gently creamy oak, just the right amount of spirit intensity and there it is again, that "Wisp Of Smoke". And it just lingers tasting of ginger nut biscuits. Mr B you are a marvel!

Bakery Hill Classic Cask Strength
500ml 60.00%
Have a look at what I wrote about the 46% Classic...then turn the volume up to very load! Breathtaking. David Baker's signature creamy maltiness is these, basically it envelopes the entire mouth, but the high intensity spirit just drives this whisky right down the palate. Surprisingly notes of chocolate, bitter orange and rosewater make an appearance. And once again, the maltiness just lasts and lasts. (pic is a representation only)
