From Ian MacLeod (est. 1933 and owners of Glengoyne distillery) comes this independent bottling of one my favourite distilleries: Dailuaine (pron "dal-yew-in"). Traditionally a big, heavy oily spirit and this new 11yo that has undergone further maturation in used Tokay casks does not stray off this path: it smells of hazelnuts, cherries & aples & tastes full bodied but with plenty of cleansing citrus fruit & black pepper flavours. The spice continues to the end.

The latest edition to the Glengoyne stable and believe it or not, but this new malt is not just a de-tuning of the old 12yo cask Strength. The whole maturing process is a little different from the normal Glengoyne practice, as they have employed more 1st fill ex Bourbon casks while backing off a tad from the Euro oak sherry casks. From the distillery: The nose if loaded with coconut oil, lemon zest, honey and dried malt. On the palate, there's plenty of toffee apple and cinnamon spice flavours and this whole delicious package finishes with hints of sherry and soft oak. Well balanced. Couldn't agree more!

A more intesified Glengoyne, initially smooth and sweet and quite chewy, like the younger 10yo but then the dry & intensive white pepper flavours kick in at the end.

We definitely see the influence of ex sherry casks in this malt. More intensive again, but retains the crispness and cleanliness of the 10yo...the malt content is truly breathtaking and the oak is just about seamless.

Bingo! I've finally found what I was desperately looking for. A big, sweetly fruited, dark, resinous, fully raisined sherry monster. This malt is so luscious that it is far too easy to drink and it's so fabulously old fashioned too. I fear for this style of 100% Oloroso sherry butt matured single malt is becoming increasingly hard to procure, as very few of us are drinking sherry any more. Bravo Glengoyne! And for 2010, Glengoyne 21 wins Distillery Bottling Of The Year in the Scottish Field Whisky Challenge.
