Meet Patrick Maguire, the shy & retiring owner/distiller at Sullivan's Cove. From being the laughing stock of the spirit world, Patrick now produces award winning single malts with exports to Europe & Asia now exceeding sales in Aust. This fully bourbon matured malt reeks quality...lusciously long & sweetly rich palate & very balanced. Murray calls it dramtipodean genius while France's Sarafian calls it purely "magnificent".
And we have finally got Patrick's new Bourbon 8yo...boy how this little distillery has grown up.

I met a Frenchman in London, who went by the name of Gregoire Sarafian, who turns out to be the French's answer to Jim Murray...and I am talking about a premier league whisky critic. Look out for him. Oh, by the way this is what he had to say about Patrick's Double Cask, "Almost perfect and regarding to the palate and age, it could ave been twice the age...".

The claim is that this is the oldest Irish single grain ever released, funny that, last year we bought in Milroy's Cooley which is a 16yo!! BUT, but, but, this is still a brialliant whiskey. This 15yo comes from the Cooley distillery, it's soft, sweet and delicious with hints vanilla, honey and oak and o nly 5000 bottles have been filled. Jim Murray gives it 90pts and describes it as "Beautiful".

Greenspot is a pure 'potstill' Irish whiskey made by the Midleton distillery (home of Jameson) for the Dublin whisky merchants Mitchell & Son. Pure potstill is a style of irish whiskey made in larger copper potstills with a mix of malted and unmalted barley. "Pure pot still…unquestionably one of the world's greatest branded whiskies." Jim Murray 93pts '08.

It's not often that we see a new release from one of my favourite distilleries. And this Double Cask 16yo lives up to my expectations. The combination of Bourbon & Sherry maturation, leaves this malt luscioulsy smoothe and sweet. But there's a nice touch of spiciness that combines with the gentle oak, rich malt and balanced alcohol that stops this malt from being cloyingly sweet. Murray rates it at 93.5pts.

Since Glenmorangie and then Moet Hennessy got behind this distillery, there has been no looking back as this so called "entry level" malt is of a standard that few malts have ever come close to. Clean, precise, intense, complex, mouthfilling and of course highly peaty. Awesome in all departments. Just ask Jim Murray, Franz Scheurer and a raft of other notable whisky scribes.

Industry identity Mr Billy Walker has done an amazing job of re-inventing this old Chivas distillery and the 10yo Curiositas is one of his splendid outcomes. A full on peat monster that Jim Murray rates a 95.5. Very youthful, very exuberant.

The new owners of Dalmore have finally spruced up the entire range. And I dare say the quality has got heaps better as well, esepcially when you think that Dave Robertson (Ex Macallan) is lurking in the background as well. The new 12yo is matured in a mixture of ex bourbon & sherry oak, and you can really taste the sherried fruitiness on the palate. Murray loved it at 95pts, others have described it as oily rich with a big dose of confectionary and fruit salad flavours. And as the distillery says, "robust yet elegant".

Certainly this is another Diageo distillery that is not in the superstar league, in fact you could almost call it a hidden malt. For Glen Elgin is one of those big Speyside distilleries where most of its working life was devoted to supplying spirit to the blended whisky market.
So it's nice to see an official bottling like this 12yo: a dry combination of ginger, honey, dark chocolate & toffee & the malt is crisp. Great mouthfeel.
Jim Murray, "absolutely murders Cragganmore as Diageo's top dog Speysider." 89 pts 2009 Bible.

Now the claim is that this whisky was distilled in 1971, but there is nowhere on the label that states this, except a rotation number of M01871. But it is matured in Oloroso sherry casks for 33 years. One retailer sees it as "quite possibly the best Glendronach ever released". Murray gives it 95pts stating, want to know what sherry should really nose like: invest in a bottle of this". Also gold a Gold Medal at the San Francisco Spirits Competition.

This distillery literally came back from the dead...opened 1875, closes 1908, reopen 1931, closes 1936, re-open 1960, mothballed 1986, sold then finally re-opened after refurbishment in 2008. The current distillery manager is non other than Graham Eunson, ex Glenmorangie. So it is remarkable then, that the current owners still have access to stocks left from older distillings, which this 21yo represents.
Sherry matured, tea and boiled fruits and pear flavours dominate. Jim Murray called it, "a malt that simply sings and a fabulous benchmark for the new owners" and gave it 94pts!

Now with Bonus 50ml bottle of HP 18!!
When you talk about the world of whisky or even for that matter the bigger world of oak aged spirits, somewhere in the conversation the name Highland Park will always crop up.
The HP 12 still remains one of the most mildly mannered but exquisitely tasty single malts on the shelf. The honey sweetness matches up so well with the “bonfire” qualities of the peat. And what is even more remarkable is this malt's balance between its bitter, smokey elements, the sweet fruitiness of the spirit and the spiciness of the oak.
Murray rates it at 91pts and comments, "Disappointing HP? Not a bit of it!! Because the complexity still keeps you mesmerised."

Some say that this is best malt in the world, others say that it is the only malt worth drinking in the world and some say that there are certainly some whisky whackers out there. Me, I'm a little bit cautious when it comes to this malt - in the past I've found it way too variable, from being outstandingly good to being downright faulty. Murray currently rates it at 95.5pts.
