This is the type of malt that gets me going. You hardly ever see it as an official bottling and only very occasionally do you see it as an indie. Founded in 1824, as with a lot of Speyside distilleries, was subject to many periods of closure. The distillery was eventually purchased from UDL by Inverhouse which was then taken over by Pacific Spirits (Thai Beverages). UD left Inverhouse with no maturing stocks! So getting hold of an 18yo with full sherry maturation...did get me going!
Distilled 1990, bottled 2008& 846 bottles only.

Just love Bladnoch, in all its various forms and guises. And I love the new fancy pants packaging that Ian Mac have come up with for their Limited Edition Collection range of Chieftain's Choice. Triple distilled, matured in hogsheads (presumably American oak) but displayijg a marvelous golden hue. This malt has texture, tons of charm along with that typical Bladnoch grasssiness.
In their words, "NOSE: Fresh, lemongrass, freshly cut ginger, chestnuts. BODY: Powerful, spicy, grapefruit, tangerine. FINISH: Light delicate floral notes. Mouth watering."
Distilled 1992, bottled 2009, 360 bottles.

From Ian MacLeod (est. 1933 and owners of Glengoyne distillery) comes this independent bottling of one my favourite distilleries: Dailuaine (pron "dal-yew-in"). Traditionally a big, heavy oily spirit and this new 11yo that has undergone further maturation in used Tokay casks does not stray off this path: it smells of hazelnuts, cherries & aples & tastes full bodied but with plenty of cleansing citrus fruit & black pepper flavours. The spice continues to the end.

It amazes me that a company could close a distillery that produced some very wonderful triple distilled spirit. So it was with some surprise & glee when I spotted this one: a rich, full bodied style with restrained sherry & peppery/meaty notes. 100% sherry matured, distilled 1990, bottled 2008, 744 bottles only.

One of these great single malts on this earth. And one of the finest triple this planet has ever seen. And the one that United Distillers (now Diageo) in their infinite wisdom decided to close down. In their words, "Nose: Elegant floral and citrus nose with light oak wood. Palate: Fresh, light, floral sweetness and delicate light smoke. Finish: Elegant, delicate sweetness and fruity notes."

Ian MacLeod have released an impressive malt that celebrates the Auld Alliance between Scotland & France. And the whisky? IM have matured a distinct & assertive Islay malt in ex Chateaunuef du Pape barrels no less! And have released it as a 16yo.
Smelling of smoked haddock, rich fruit cake with iodine and smoke. The palate remains rich, dry, spicy, peaty & jammed full with chocolate. It finishes with ginger & peat.

John Milroy is the doyen of the London whisky trade and his old shop, Milroy's of Soho was for many a year, the place to buy whisky. So when you see the Milroy name, even under its current new owners, you should always expect something special. And this 25yo Douglas Laing Provenace Caol Ila, does not disappoint: a well aged gentle giant, very rich & charming and one that has reached that ethereal stage in its life. Very harmonious and yet still shows some lively peat.

Now I'm excited. Never had Braeval before? So haven't I!! This is a big distillery that was built by Chivas in the early 1970's, mothballed for 6 years and re-opened in 2008.
This indie from Ian Macleod has been fully matured in Manzanilla sherry butts, which leaves this malt smelling & tasting of citrus fruits, medium bodied but quite zesty.

Sadly sold out. I know his little smokey gem has been around for a little while, and I know that it’s an Independent “vatting”, but hell’s bells, what a cracker it is. And let’s dispel a little myth, I don’t think it is a vatting at all but a full on undiluted single malt from Islay. It’s all bourbon, it’s oh so very dry and the smoke just keeps rolling over the tongue and for those that just like to get stuck into their malts without wasting a lot of grey matter on it, this is ace. It’s just so direct and to the point. The word is that it’s 100% Caol Ila.

Sadly sold out. A 39 year old grain whisky, now, how odd is that! Wow, and what a whisky it is. From it’s syrupy, oily nose that smells of oranges to a creamily sweet palate that’s still fresh and lively after all those years in oak and still shows a hint of fresh citrus fruit flavours. When I tried it, I was just stunned. All bourbon wood and definitely no colouring .

A brand new whisky range and a well priced one at that, from Wm Cadenhead and what a way to start the range than with a well aged Auchentoshan that is incredibly rich and creamy with plenty of honey, vanilla and apple fruit flavours. This is one drammable whisky. Mmmm, I think I'll just top up me glass...

Big, big Auchroisk. A massive distillery that virtually nobody has ever heard of. There are hardly any official bottlings and even indie bottlings are hard to find. Most, if not all of the production goes into the J&B blend. So the decision to go with this Duthies was an easy one. And what a right decision that was. This is a excellent malt that belies its advanced age. I'll let Melbourne whisky professional Ryan Marshman do the talking, "Tasting Notes: Deep straw colour with straw hue. Lifted aromas of fairy floss, coconut, hot buttered toast, nuts, a smidge of sulphur, salt and mixed peel. A curious combination, though endlessly appealing. The palate is plush and generous, with big, rich malty flavours of new leather, dried fruits, a plethora of spices and waxy apple. The booming finish gives the slightest of prickles before fading to a very lengthy, leathery, spicy aftertaste. An unusual, yet entirely adorable senior citizen." Score: 93

I like this new range from Cadenhead. Never been a fan of the old black, brooding packaging the old Cadenhead’s came in. This Clynelish is loaded up with marzipan, fresh orange zest and of course Clynelish's famous seaside saltiness. It initially starts of tasting hot and spirity, in fact it's quite bracing then it gets sweet and syrupy with a slight hint of peat at the end. The finish is crisply dry and peppery...and lasting. Most intriguing.

Wow! An Indie bottling of Cragganmore...now that's a rare thing. And this Crag from Duthies, a new range of well aged & well priced malts from Wm Cadenhead, is probably the most forceful Cragganmore I've seen for a very long time. It's all chocolate, toffee, cinnamon & fudge on the nose but then the palate lets rip with dried fruits and citrus flavours and then a wave of sweet fudge envelops the entire mouth followed by a sweet & lingering finish.

A new range of well aged & well priced whiskies from Wm Cadenhead and I have to say that the bright labels and rotund bottles look very attractive. This 17yo Campbeltown malt is a right little charmer. This offering is the complete opposite of many Glen Scotia's I've seen in the past (i.e. not hot & spicy) as it is jammed packed with stone fruit flavours, vanilla, cream & caramel flavours & its very well rounded. There's also a nutty side to it too! And that's not the guys who are selling it.

A private bottling of Glenrothes is always a treat. And this offering from Cadenhead's Duthies range is a beaut. Smelling of Highland toffee with hints of treacle and marzipan while on the palate it is surprisingly dry yet sweet with plenty tropical fruits and treacle flavours. Overall it is a full bodied style that has a dry finish.
