ISLAY
Lagavulin 1995 17yo Distillers Edition
700ml 43.00%
  Ret
$230.00

This is a most impressive Islay whisky. As I have said before take a slightly younger Lagavulin spirit and pour it into some used PX (very sweet) sherry casks. The sweetly raisined fruit works so well with the big blast of peat. And best of all, it is one of the few spirits that perfectly matches those amazing 99% pure cocoa chocolates! Pic indicative only.

Lagavulin 1996 12yo Distillers Edition
700ml 43.00%
  Ret
$230.00

This is the 2012 release of this richly sherried (PX sherry that is) and peaty dram. Christmas cake, rum, chocolate and a bonfire. And with such splendid balance too.

Lagavulin 1997 15yo Distillers Edition
700ml 43.00%
  Ret
$210.00

One of TOWC's favourite, if not well trusted malts for the last 15 or so years. For me the perfect combo of smoke and sherried fruit. Classic big, heavy weight and full on smoky Lagavulin 16yo that's had further matured in ex PX sherry casks. The end result is a melange of big, fat, sweet tasting spirit along with with plenty of smoke and that lush Christmas cake fruit flavours. Magic stuff.

Lagavulin 1998 15yo Distillers Edition
700ml 43.00%
  Ret
$210.00

A 2015 bottling of this extraordinarily good sherry influenced Lagavulin. From WhiskyNotes, "rich, with more ashy peat than on the nose. Some tarry notes and earthy notes. Oranges, a hint of herbal honey, but again no overdose of sherry sweetness. Tobacco leaves, some mint and Turkish coffee in the end. Less sherry than, say, five years ago."

Lagavulin 1999 15yo Distillers Edition
700ml 43.00%
  Ret
$210.00

It's always a joy to see the famed and richly flavoured Lagavulin finished in PX sherry oak. Bottled in 2015, so it's either a 15 or 16yo, From WhiskySaga, "Rich in sweetness at first, then it sort of switches gears and I find dry ashes and pepper. Amazingly it switches again and there’s notes of fruit juices – citrus, melon and pineapple."

Laphroaig 10yo
700ml 40.00%
  Ret
$120.00

Another absolute Islay standard...lots of smoke, iodine, rubber, coconut oak, drying, bracing, challenging and definitely not for those looking for a late afternoon comfort dram.

Laphroaig Quarter Cask
700ml 48.00%
  Ret
$125.00

Very popular, very engaging, at first creamily sweet Laphroaig, but as dig deeper into it, the mid palate is dry, spicy, peaty. The finish is long and smokily dry. The technique for this malt is to use small 80lt ex bourbon casks, hence the uptake of oak flavours (vanilla & coconut) is faster. Just ask Bill Lark, he's been doing it for years. Buxton's 101.

Cadenhead Single Cask Highland Park 1996 20yo
700ml 50.60%
  Ret
$299.00

A somewhat curious HP as they notes don't really mention the classic peat/honey combo that HP used to bang on about. I've seen modern versions, very similar to this one. Distilled 1996, bottled 2016, ex Bourbon cask, out-turn: 258 bottles. From Mr Cadenhead, Mark Watt, "A little lemon, vanilla, lots of cream, apple crumble, icing sugar and pear tart...a very coastal finish."

Cadenhead Single Cask Ledaig 1997 19yo
700ml 53.90%
  Ret
$179.00

Don't often see or taste both indie bottlings of the peaty Tobermory let alone at such an age. Interestingly enough, the first official release of Ledaig was not until 2007! So it's rather unique. And the taste, over to you Mr Watt, "Grassy notes, green apples, soft black pepper and an undertone of smoke and peat."

Cadenhead Small Batch Arran 1997 19yo
700ml 52.40%
  Ret
$189.00

Aaah, an aged Arran that was laid down in the very days of what was a very new distillery. Distilled in 1997, bottled in 2016, matured in 1 x ex Boubon cask and 1 x sherry cask. Out-tun: 486 bottles. I love the official notes, "Fruit pudding, vanilla, plum jam and rich creamy chocolate, cofffee liqueur." Not your standard tasting note for an Arran malt.

Cadenhead Small Batch Highland Park 1990 25yo
700ml 50.60%
  Ret
$499.00

This is a vatting of two bourbon hogsheads and as Serge Valentin declares, "Sharp, waxy, citrusy, herbal, very much focused, well-chiselled, slightly smoky… And there’s this bitterness that keeps it a little ‘intellectual. 91pts " noting that he can't understand why the distillery got rid of these casks.

Cadenhead Small Batch Tobermory 1995 21yo
700ml 52.50%
  Ret
$199.00

Here's a gem to fill the hole left by the official age stated Tober's leaving the shelves. Distilled 1995, bottled 2016, ex Bourbon casks, out-tun: 450 bottles. In Watt's words": The saltiness continues and a slight smokiness emerges with undertones of custard creams and a short waxy note."

Highland Park Dark Origins
700ml 46.80%
  Ret
$190.00

Like the name as it so suggest sherry oak maturation. It's of a modern age as it a regular item for a no age statement.Eighty per cent sherry oak and 20% Bourbon, and all are first fill. So a more usual mix for HP unlike the 17yo Ice. From Scotch Addict, "Nice body, smoke on the front and then many of flavors associated with a sherry maturation like spices, walnuts, almond, and some orange peel."

Ledaig 1996 18yo Small Batch Oloroso Casks
700ml 46.30%
  Ret
$450.00

Be still thy beating heart. Full on peat, full on sherry and an 18yo! How good is that? From the distillery, "The palate is powerfully rich bursting with sherried, herbal smoky flavours, orange peel, coffee, a touch of sea salt, tobacco and white pepper. And the finish is long and quite pungent with more smoke, as well as a hint of liquorice and sea spray."

Talisker 10yo
700ml 45.80%
  Ret
$125.00

Mmmmm..love that pungent scents of the sea, the big whiff of white pepper, the salty tang at the back and that classic mouthwatering finish. Love it! Buxton's 101.

Talisker 2002 10yo Distillers Edition
700ml 45.80%
  Ret
$145.00

Classic Talli brightness, attack, saltiness and that brilliant pepperiness just gets better with a super layer of very fine, high class creamy toffee flavours. Just brilliant.

Talisker 57" North
700ml 57.00%
  Ret
$180.00

A no age cak strength version of the ever popular and always reliable 10yo. As you could imagine it's powerful, intensive, even biting with a big dose of smoke, ash, sea spray & citrus notes. The added alcohol adds a really nice touch of freshness to this remarkable malt.

Talisker Malt Tasting Pack 3 x
200ml 49.50%

$135.00

What a perfect tasting pack. 3 x 200ml bottles of 10yo, Distillers Edition and 57 Deg North.

CAMPBELTOWN
Glengyle Kilkerran Work In Progress 2 Grey Label 6yo
700ml 46.00%
  Ret
$91.00

The feints of the 1st edition have gone and now this malt is starting to blossom. The length and zestiness bordering on salty of this mat is amazing and do like the crisp maltiness mid palate. Can't wait for the next one! From the distillery, "Nose: Light and fragrant, the nose leads you into the dram gently. Refreshing lemon citrus, hints of pear and just a dash of sherbet. Palate: Masses of sweet vanilla immediately take over the taste buds before the classic Campbeltown salt hits the tongue. Creamy toffee and butterscotch become apparent as the natural oils coat the mouth. Finish: gentle smoke comes from deep in the throat followed up by very pleasant ground spices".

Glengyle Kilkerran Work In Progress 3 Green Label 7yo
700ml 46.00%
  Ret
$91.00

Here's the next stage in the evolution of a brand new malt. And it just gets better all the time. The feintiness of the last edition is gone, the oak influence is now getting richer and the malt quality seems to be fatting up. So guess what? It’s starting to show some maturity! Here’s my notes from a Dec 2011 Perth tasting: Nose: herbs, creamy American oak, vanilla, initially lots of alcohol lift with hints of kitchen spice, a touch of peat and sadly a hint of rubber (possible some feints still creeping through) Palate: Bright, lively and kitchen spicy. Long palate, vanilla cream oak, crisp maltiness, big dollop of mid palate sweetness. Finish: Long lasting oak creaminess. What do I reckon? Well worth the try! (pic indicative only)
