SINGLE MALT WHISKY
Highland Park 25yo
700ml 48.10%
  Ret
POA

This is the whisky that most whisky aficionados go weak at the knees at. From the distillery...Colour: Natural colour; dark red golden, clear and bright. Bouquet: Very rich, mature oak; chocolate; fudge. Palate: Full, rich burst of flavour; soft honey; nutty toffee. Finish: Rich, long and surprisingly sweet for its age.

This is a cracker, a true fino-esque style malt…searingly dry & piercingly intensive and yet brilliantly fresh.

Inchmurrin 12yo

A single malt coming from that rather large, 4mil lts annually, but little known distillery Loch Lomond. Murray rates it a 80.

Isle of Arran Tokaji Aszu Wine Cask

Sadly out of stock. An interesting privately owned distillery that I suspect, is still finding its feat. The house style is a malt forward style and they have been producing a myriad of top dressed malts over the last few years.

Sadly out of stock. Douglas Laing bottling: sea salty wind, tar & harbour walls,

Jura 10yo
700ml 40.00%
  Ret
$80.00

A very soft and easily quaffable dram that really wont tax the taste buds or I dare say the wallet. A mixture of earthy malt, the lightest hint of peat and the faint tang of spice. A medium bodied dram that shouldn't offend but one glass will never be enough.

Jura 18yo
700ml 40.00%

POA

The new kid on the Jura block, and what a price for an 18yo! Ex bourbons and sherry oak matured. Smelling of marzipan, fruit cake, light pine resin and barest hint of peat. The palate is softly sweet but there is a dry ginergery element to it as well and of course the sherry notes stand out as well. Overall, a harmonious and very easy (dare I say too easy) drinking 18yo.

Jura Boutique 1993 Sherry Ji Cask
700ml 54.00%
  Ret
$220.00

A special single cask offering direct from the distillery. Matured in American white oak from 1993 until 2002 then re-racked in 2002 into Oloroso Pasada Sherry Butts from Gonzalez Byass. Here's what the distillery says, "Rich citrus marmalade, crushed almonds, spicy ginger and roasted coffee". Here's what I think...simply stunning! Zesty, softly elegant with restrained raisined fruit, rich malt and a fabulous layer of richly luscious alcohol. And the length...it's still going!! Fab. The Ji, Jo, Xu? I can only guess...

Jura Boutique 1995 Bourbon Jo Cask
700ml 56.50%
  Ret
$190.00

The label describes that this whisky has been matured in "small batch bourbon cask", does this suggest Beam casks? This 12yo is bitey, but there's plenty of creamy oak and rich maltiness along with a gingery warmth to balance this up and as with the other Boutiques, a thread of zesty citrus flavours. The length is impressive.

Jura Boutique 1999 Heavy Peat Bourbon Xu Cask
700ml 55.00%
  Ret
$170.00

By Jura standards this special 11yo, is a very big, heavily peated monster, at 30ppm. By the standards set by a couple of lunatic Islay bottlings, this is a mild mannered, richly dense malt with a fine dusting of peat. Once again, there's the distinct taste of citrus fruit as with the other Boutiques along with a very long palate and lasting flavour. Good one.

Jura Superstition
700ml 43.00%
  Ret
$90.00

Great packaging, love the name and the dram ain't bad either. This current version combines heavily peated young Jura with an older, more creamier, American oak influenced dram. The end result it is a well balanced dram with a degree of richness, a gentle air of smokiness about it with a hint of grassiness. A nIce one to have around.

Kilchoman 3yo 2009 Autumn Release
700ml 46.00%
  Ret
$150.00

Just in from the newest Islay distillery. In fact it's been well over 120 years since one was built. Small, artsinal, farm based distillery turning out 100,000lts of spirit annually from barley grown on the farm. Three years in American oak then an additional 3 months in sherry butts. The distillery describes it as, smelling strongly of part, wood smoke and medicinal flavours, viscous on the palate with a creamy fruitiness and peat at the end. A must try for the peat heads out there!

Kilkerran Work In Progress 5yo
700ml 46.00%
  Ret
$95.00

Shane and I have just completed a number of tastings of this whisky across Syd, Melb & Adelaide and this "Work In Progress" just shined. Yes there is a whiff of feintiness on the nose (not fully matured spirit) but the clean and intensive attack on the palate, the crisp & chewy malt along with some bracing peat, made for a splendid and highly complex & captivating malt. Even at 5 years! Just imagine it at year 10!! I just could nose this malt all night...so very intriguing. Kilkerran is the first single malt to come from Springbank's new standalone Glengyle distillery.

Lagavulin 12yo Cask Strength 7th Release
700ml 57.90%

$185.00

This is the current release of this Islay star from Diageo.Pungent, lifted, intense, brutal, there is so much going on with this malt that it almost defied description. And one more thing, it is perfectly balanced, either wood, alcohol, texture & flavour is out of place. very complex. A big bravo from me! Such consitency AND no caramel colouring!

Lagavulin 16yo
700ml 43.00%
  Ret
$120.00

What can I say? The devotees of this are legion as they are legendary, and I know far too many of this highly peated, richly flavoured malt that refuse any others for fear of loosing their taste for it. Stuff of legends.

Lagavulin 1993 Distillers Edition
700ml 43.00%
  Ret
POA

The current release of this most impressive Islay whisky, as I have said before take a slightly younger Lagavulin spirit and pour it into some used PX (very sweet) sherry casks. The sweetly rasined fruit works so well with the big blast of peat. And best of all, it is one of the few spirits that perfectly matches those amazing 99% pure cocoa chocolates! Pic indicative only.

Lagavulin 1995 Friends Of The Classic Malts
700ml 48.00%
  Ret
$190.00

Now when this popped onto my list, I just had to get hold of it. It was released in 2008 for the Friends Of The Classic Malts, and represents a Lagavulin that has been matured in ex European oak barrels. The official tasting notes state, " Sweet, smoky saltiness embraced by a meaty richness. Delicious, drying finish. Richer texture than the annual Special release twelve year old." It appears that this was an almost exclusively release for the German market.

One for the aficionados of Lagavulin or lovers of old aged whiskies. Haven't tried it as it sold out too fast!! So any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Laphroaig 10 yo
700ml 40.00%

$100.00

Another absolute Islay standard...lots of smoke, iodine, rubber, coconut oak, drying, bracing, challenging and definitely not for those looking for a late afternoon comfort dram.
