SINGLE MALT WHISKY
Laphroaig 10yo Cask Strength Batch 001
700ml 55.70%
  Ret
$135.00

This is the newly revamped Laphroaig 10 Cask Strength, now with Batch dating. Still for me this is one of the best Laphroaigs around. The extra addition of alcohol improves this famously peaty & full on iodine malt out of sight. You just get an extra layer of sweetness and a big dose of extra intrigue without the burn. Magic stuff! Lpahroaig describes it as, "Spices, peat, big, engulfing smoke. Some sweetness, then an insurgence of dry oak and coastal notes."

A milder, fuller flavoured, sherry influenced Laphroaig, both the peat and iodine are toned down a tad. And with the advent of the new 18yo, this will be last we see of this old standard.

Laphroaig 18yo

The new kid on the block and the one that replaces a very old favourite of ours, the Laph 15. Has been described as both soft, sweet & spicy as well as strong and gutsy. But once you get your nose into it, there's that unmistakable smell of Laphroaig peat along with some creamy toffee. It’s oak sweet to taste, with hints of the sea and floral notes, and the its smoothness really does shoe its age. And best of all, it's now at 48%!

The majesty that is Laphroaig: ethereal, subtle, wafts of smoke, beach bonfires, brine & iodine and very gently rich.

Laphroaig Cairdeas

Now I am led to believe that it’s pronounced “car-chase”. I’m also led to believe that it is a vatting of 13yo, 15 and 17yo Laphroaig but a spot of research shows that Cairdeas was originally produced for Islay’s 2008 Feis Ile Malt & Music bash and was created as a direct result of the distillery’s original work on Quarter Cask. Tasting: Big Laphroaig pungency, plenty of peat smoke and iodine as you would expect, surprisingly gentle honey with floral & citrus notes on the palate but the peat just shines through, long and lingering liqourice, salt and smokey flavours. Very Laphroaig!

Laphroaig Quarter Cask
700ml 48.00%

Very popular, very engaging, at first creamily sweet Laphroaig, but as dig deeper into it, the mid palate is dry, spicy, peaty. The finish is long and smokily dry. The technique for this malt is to use small 80lt ex bourbon casks, hence the uptake of oak flavours (vanilla & coconut) is faster. Just ask Bill Lark, he's been doing it for years.

The peaty Tobermorey, that's dry and intensive. From the Isle of Mull.

The big peaty & fully sherried youngster from Isle of Mull's Tobermory distillery. Believed to be a 5yo.

Another Diageo semi-hidden distillery. This official bottling is a light bourbon based malt with plenty of floral and apple notes. Some have described it as the summer malt.

I haven’t stocked this one for ages. A challenging curio which I have to say now "enjoys" a rather notorious reputation. This 12yo replaces the old 8yo. From Whisky-Distilleries, "Hints of ripe fruit (pear, melon) mixed to discrete whiffs of hay and honey. In the palate, smoothness dominates, with touches of honey and nuts. A lack at complexity however, but some very nice impressions. The finish is a bit too short, with slightly bitter hints mixed to smoothness of honey, still present". The distillery was demolished in 1996.

Longrow 10yo
700ml 46.00%
  Ret
$123.00

The 10yo is a mix of 60% sherry and 40% bourbon matured, very clean, pretty peaty if a little unruly. Smoke, tar & peat if you really want to be blunt but there is some pleasing mid palate sweetness.

Longrow 10yo 100 Proof
700ml 57.00%

$138.00

100% bourbon oak matured, it smells sweet and malty with feint iodine notes. Not exactly expressive in the peat department, but hey, we are talking about Springbank here!. On the palate: oily and dense with the sooty & embery peat more in the background than up front. The finish is not surprisingly, salty….for that is what Longrow is all about.

Longrow 12yo 1996 Society Bottling

Don't tell any body...but I wasn't supposed to get tihs exclusive Springbank Society bottling. Sherried and dark.

Longrow 14yo
700ml 46.00%
  Ret
$135.00

Compared to the 10yo and the 10yo 100 proof, the 14yo introduces a bit more depth, a touch of elegance and has a couple of Longrow sherry casks thrown in for good measure. Cream, apricots, chocolate & burnt embers.

Shane (the importer of Springbank/Longrow/Cadenhead into Australia) wont let me taste it. Far too rare and collectible he roared down the phone. It sold out instantly in the UK and now the collectors are starting to look around for more. Meanwhile, whisky pundit, taster & Malt Maniac Serge Valentin has described this very limited edition malt as, “legend of the future” while Mr Murray describes it as, “The most subtle and sophisticated Longrow I’ve seen for 20yrs” 94pts

Longrow 1996 10yo

This is an early bottling of The 10yo which is a mix of 60% sherry and 40% bourbon matured, very clean, pretty peaty if a little unrurly.

Longrow 7yo Gaja Barolo
700ml 55.80%

$121.00

As Dave Lister would say, "brutal". Take a very young, highly peated, massively alcoholic Longrow and age it in used Angelo Gaja (the father of the modern Italian wine industry) French oak barriques that have been used for his famous Barolo wine (nebbiolo) and what you get is a blatantly aggressive, densely smokey and very meaty malt. And does it work? Wow does it work!! Breathtaking.

For me, this was a standout malt in 2008 & ‘09: A marriage of a 7, 10 and 14yo Longrow peated spirits that have been aged in bourbon, sherry , port and rum casks resulting in a whisky that is a joy to behold, mainly for its gentle balance and marvelous dry embery smoke. Murray loved it...95.5pts Bible 2010 and gave it a Liquid Gold!

Macallan 10yo Sherry Oak
700ml 40.00%
  Ret
$95.00

This is the distillery’s current version of a very old favourite. Sadly it has copped a lot of criticism lately, with some critics moaning that it is a pale imitation of the "old Macca 10". Well all I can say is that it is still fully matured in Spanish oak that used to hold Oloroso sherry, the spirit is hallmark Macallan, very rich almost oily with plenty of citrus flavours. Very well balanced. And by the way, Mr Murray rates it at 91pts. So all I can say is...please re-consider.

Macallan 12yo Sherry Oak

A sweet, more sherried version of the standard 10yo but just perfectly shows off that fat, magnificently heavy weight spirit Macallan is so famous for.
