From the Isle of Mull comes this Burns Stewart owned, unpeated malt. The peated version is called Ledaig. This 10yo is barley rich with plenty of brine characters, hints of honey and pepper. The finish is dry and spicy.

I suspect this is my 1st Tomintoul as an OB, and this Oloroso matured malt will certainly bring a smile or two. Now owned by Angus Dundee (you remember Lorne McKillop & McKillop's Choice, one and the same). Quite surprisingly, this distillery was founded in 1964. This is the 10th year of AG ownership....so happy birthday!! A light floral style, that initially was matured in Bourbon barrels then spent an additional 18 months in Oloroso casks. Overall there is a touch of Tomintoul’s famed grassiness along with lighter fruitcake, spice & wine gum flavours. It's by no means a sherry monster and well worth a try.

Tormore 12yo

Somewhat a mystery malt. Owned by Pernod Ricard (Chivas Regal) and was only commissioned in 1958. Big though, as annual production is approx. 3.7 mil lites a year. The 12yo is the only official bottling and proves to be a sweetly perfumed malt, lots of toasted almond, vanilla, bread and cake flavours. The finish is light and touch spicy.

Tullibardine 1966 39yo

A big, wonderful, full flavoured, no holds barred sherry monster. A rich rosewood colour, with treacle, creme caramel, dried fruit, marzipan, Christmas pudding, flavours and that's not all…there is so much going on in this malt. Fabbo! And if you need any further convincing, give Mal at the Rob Roy Hotel in Adeliade a call...I've never seen a smile so big!

Now into its fifth year of new ownership, Tullibardine has been been completely refreshed and revitalised under the direction of industry legend, Mr John Black and the highly regarded Michael Beamish. Initially crisp & dry then a wave of biscuity sweet malt arrives along with a dash of vanillin oak. The finish is a surprise: fruit tingles!.

What a difference a year makes: Fresh, clean & lively with a hint of sherbet fizz on the nose, but the extra alcohol adds weight & texture to the palate. Lots of creamy malt, American oak & a hint of sherry oak as well. Round and very well balanced.. The distillery has now sold out of this gem.

Now into its fifth year of new ownership, Tullibardine has been been completely refreshed and revitalised under the direction of industry legend, Mr John Black and the highly regarded Michael Beamish. The entry level 1993 vintage (just over a 10yo) is my benchmark malt: fresh, floral scent, vanilla, chocolate orange and very well defined maltiness.

Class Tullibardine finished in casks that held Sicily's famous spicily sweet fortified wine. Very soft yet spicy with touches of cinnamon and pine needles. Works very well with the malty Tulli style.

Yes, I know the spelling is wrong, but hey, just taste the whisky...Soft & oily, Mirabelle fruit, chilled fresh fruit salad note with traces of orange citrus.

An absolute winner with Aussie palates last year. Sublime and faultless Oloroso sherry casks married perfectly to Tulli's breathtaking maltiness. Murray loved it and gave it a whopping 94pts. And don't think of this as one of those flighty top dressed malts, as it has spent over 18 months in this superb sherry cask.

Tullibardine John Black Selection 1988 Sherry

John Black is an industry icon and he also happens to be the lynchpin at the recently reviatalised Tullibardine distillery. Mr Black's selections are based around single cask selection and usually full on sherry matured examples. From Mr Balck's notes, "This single malt has a lovely autumnal and russet brown colour. There are varying levels of aromas that include Demerara sugar, a hint of maple syrup with a touch of orange blossom. The taste the alcohol is there but is integrated with balanced acidity and a viscosity that fills the mouth. Orange and chocolate flavours abound with a lovely crème brulée character that runs through to the finish with hints of barley at the end. Remarkably subtle yet very complex, this is a cask that has provided a Single Malt of real character, charm and finesse". Bottled March 2009.

John Black’s piece de resistance….an absolute cracker of a malt and the star of the tasting. Coming from a single dry Oloroso cask, this malt is massively sweet, layered like a chocolate cake & immensely rich and mouthfilling. The oak is seamless, the alcohol is big but totally integrated leaving a totally balanced malt that is chock full of dried & stewed dark fruits and candied peel

SWEDEN
Mackmyra First Edition Roasted Swedish Oak
700ml 46.10%

$100.00

This First Edtion Roasted Swedish Oak is Mackmyra's first major release that defines the Mackmyra style - elegant flavours with hints of citrus and cream caramel. Matured in 100lt ex first fill bourbon casks and hand made roasted new Swedish oak, and in their words, "The colour is light yellow, with hints of amber. The nose is fruity with citrus, pear, apple, honey, light oak with hints of lightly toasted bread and fresh, buttery caramel. The flavour is fruity and subtle, with citrus, caramel and honey. A light hint of oak can be noted at the end. The aftertaste is well-adjusted and balanced, with hints of dark chocolate". And my words: Tight, intensive, fresh malted barley, creamy oak, citrus zest, crisp dry finish. In a word: mouthwatering, lasting. Extremely well made. Bravo! Mackmyra.

Mackmyra Preludium 05 Flavoursome Small Casks

The Preludium range form Mackmyra, are a specialist one off bottlings essentially showing off the various spirit and oak styles that go into the more regular Mackmyra single malts. Preludium 05: Flavoursome Small Casks is first matured in 200lt new Swedish, ex sherry and ex bourbon casks then it's finished in 100lt new bourbon casks. Wow! What a combination. And the taste? In their words, "The nose has a toasted character with notes of vanilla, dried fruit and honey. Wisps of delicate smoke hover in the background. The palate is spicy, with an intense vanilla sweetness from the charred casks. Hints of oak and fiery spices linger in the finish."

Mackmyra Preludium 06 Fresh Swedish Smoke
500ml 50.50%

$110.00

The latest and I've heard the ultimate (so final) Preludium from Mackmyra. 06 is a 4 year old that has been matured for four years in first fill ex bourbon oak and then finished in a 100lt combination of new and used American oak. Importantly, the spirit has Swedish peat smoke. In their words, "The nose is very fruity, with aromas of lemon, pear, banana and honey, with gentle hints of caramel, roast oak and pepper. It has a very distinctive smoky character with undertones of juniper. The flavour is fresh, fruity and smoky, with intense vanilla and caramel. The aftertaste brings sweetness, roast oak cask, smoke and a touch of salt. "

Mackmyra Special 01 Eminent Sherry
700ml 51.60%

$125.00

Special 01 Eminent Sherry has been fully matured in ex sherry casks and in their words, "Eminent Sherry is an elegant whisky with a spicy aroma and a taste of sweet sultanas, dried fruit, butter caramel and smoke. A Swedish malt whisky to warm up cold winter souls". In my words, don't expect a big fat Oloroso sherry monster...this is all about refinement, more Amontillado or dry Oloroso. The citrus and ginger nuts are their and so is a note of smoke (I have heard they use juniper wood to smoke their grain!). Brilliant palate, tangy, zesty, fat, sweet spirit, spicy oak, long palate. Dry gingery finish. And lasting flavour. Brilliant. As Dominick Roskow has sid, "More magic from Mackmyra. If you’re not convinced yet by this distillery, this will swing it".

Mackmyra Special 02 The Anniversary Whisky
700ml 50.60%
  Ret
$125.00

The single malt from the Swedish Masters of Malt that celebrates their 10th anniversary of distilling. Matured in creamy ex bourbon casks and those very spicy and intensive new Swedish oak casks. As they say, this malt is all about ice-cream wafers and ginger snap biscuits. For me, there's fresh malt, baked vanilla custard, a dusting of oak spice (that's the Swedish oak, me thinks), lemon & oranges and that's the nose! On the palate: crisp malt, rich spirit and a layer of creamy/ice cream oak. The alcohol adds intensity and drive, but its all in balance. Soft gentle, ginergey finish. Fab.

Mackmyra Special 03 Small Casks Big Flavour
700ml 48.20%
  Ret
$125.00

Mackmyra Special:03 - Small casks, big flavour is the third bottling of Mackmyra's Special series. From their warehouses they have taken the best thirty-litre casks from three different kinds of cask: ex-bourbon, ex-sherry and new Swedish oak. And as they say, this is a tribute to the small casks with the big flavours. Special:03 is a spicy, full-bodied, fruity whisky with hints of both dried and fresh fruit, soft caramel and a slightly smoky tarry wood. An extraordinary malt whisky that challenges notions of where good whiksy comes from.
