26 November 2009
Big G's Top Ten Whiskies
For 2009...

I've been asked quite a few times over the last month or so, as to what are some of my favourite whiskies for 2009?

Well that got me thinking. I've seen some pretty exciting whiskies lately BUT I've also seen some shockers as well. So after much thought, deliberation & re-tasting, here are my Top 10 Malts for 2009….

1. Springbank 1998 PSI Small Cask 700ml 53.3% $
The sheer impact of this malt in the trade has been nothing short of breathtaking. It’s power and complexity beggars’ belief and to think that it’s a youngster, at cask strength and comes from small port casks has just left me as well as a number of trade colleagues just about speechless. And all confirmed by Jim Murray’s 95pt rating. Bravo Mr Shane.

2. BOS Caol Ila 1982 26yo Cask Strength 700ml 54.5% $
I’ve ranted and raved about the lesser alcoholic version of Caol Ila for quite a number of years. So I couldn’t resist another tilt at it, especially when it was offered to me at cask strength. All the weight, the seductive peat and pristine barley is there BUT it's doubly intensified at this higher alcohol strength. Nothing short of brilliant.
Bravo Doug McIvor at Berry’s.

3. Glenfarclas 15yo 700ml 46% $
This dram certainly has to take out the 2010 “Bang For Your Buck Award”. So much flavour, texture and just about perfect sherry oak, and did I tell you about its length? And for such an amazing price. This sherry monster rocks!

4. Springbank 18yo 700ml 46% $
This is the complete opposite of the PSI Small Cask. Quiet, refined, reserved, harmonious & nothing out of place (bit like me really!). Gently crisp & fruity with a fine dusting of peat.

5. Glengoyne 21yo 700ml 43% - restocking soon
One of the absolute revelations this year, for me that is, has been this full on Oloroso sherry matured Glengoyne. As I’ve said before, this malt is just so luscious and way too easy to drink. And in a funny way, it looks really old fashioned…along the lines of those old classic sherry malts of the 1980’s Sadly out of stock, more in the new year.

6. Balblair 1989 700ml 43% $
Saw this last year and grabbed some more on the last shipment because it’s being replaced. Why do I rate it so highly? It’s all about the barley. So pristine and perfect and works so perfectly with the creamy American oak. Definitely a benchmark in ex-Bourbon cask matured single malts.

7. BOS Laphroaig 1998 Cask Strength 700ml 61.6% $
This is Laphroaig Jim, but not as we know it! Massively pungent nose jammed packed with Laphroaig’s hallmark medicinal peat, but it’s the palate that’s got me going crazy. It is so damn rich. Massive flavour.

8. Cadenhead Ardbeg 14yo Cask Strength 700ml 58.3% $
I could have gone for the incomparable Ardbeg 10 or the frenzied Corryvreckan or the hyper Supernova for this spot, but I’m opting for this Indie bottling from Cadenhead. Why? It’s all about texture, uniqueness, richness of flavour and that smokey intensity that for me, takes Ardbeg to a whole new plane.

9. Longrow 7yo Gaja Barolo 700ml 55.8% $
Had to include this one…purely for it’s sheer unadulterated, totally manic…brutality!! Shock and awe in a glass.

10. Tullibardine John Black Selection 1988 20yo
Sherry 700ml 56% $
And finally, a gentle giant to finish with. Tullibardine’s ultra creamy malt combines just about perfectly with this whisky’s bright spirit and exquisite oak (European hogshead). Very subtle, complex and totally charming.

29 July 2009

 RUM NATION
A most interesting small company, dedicated to bottling single provincial rums with the aim of showing the world how expressive and how very regional rum/rhum/ron's flavours, textures and styles can be.

Rum Nation British Guiana Demerara Solera
N14 14yo 700ml 40%

This British Guianan rum (now Guyana, next to Venezuala)
is a finely tuned pot distilled demerara (molasses) that has been fractionally blended using a sherry style solera
system. Moderately rich and spicy. And it's maturation? It's all been done in the the cool, damp conditions of the United Kingdom!

Rum Nation Guatemala 23yo
700ml 40%

This dark & reddish rum hails from the tiny Central American nation of Gautemala. What took me with this rum is its vast age and the fact that its been fully matured in the warm and humid conditions of Guatemala. This is highly complex, very long, demerara pot still rum that shows plenty of wood spice, treacle & crisp caramel flavours.

Rum Nation Martinique Hors d'Age
Rhum Agricole 700ml 43%

From the exotic Caribbean Island of Martinique comes this
most fascinating and possibly the most intensive Rhum
Agricole I've seen in ages. Made from fermented cane juice, this Rhum is intially very feisty and then the palate opens up, showing plenty of white chocolate, cofee, butter and licquorice flavours. Very crisp and dry finish.

Rum Nation Panama 18yo 700ml 40%
From Panama...you wouldn't think this micro nation would have enough cane fields to make a decent rum...but they most ceratinly do. For you see, the company that makes it, Caribbean Spirits, were originally from Cuba. This 18yo is a beauty...rich, fully mature, showing lots of charm & charachter and chocked up with molasses, licorice, chestnut and baked apple flavours.

Rum Nation Peruano 8yo 700ml 42%
Now hands up those who have tasted , let alone ever seen, a Peruvian or Peruano rum? I certainly haven't. Now this 8yo is lively, sweet and dare I say exotic: curiously tasting of glaceed fruit, milk chocolate and molasses.

Rum Nation Jamaica Supreme Lord IV
1986 21yo 700ml 45%

What a name! And what a rum!!

Distilled 1986, bottled 2007 and fully matured in the
cold, damp Island that is the United Kingdom. Four
casks were married to produce only 1300 bottles.
And out of the entire Rum Nation catalogue, this
medium bodied style is very deeply flavoured, almost
bordering on an ethereal rum. It's very long, well rounded, subtle, lush and oh so sensuous! Brilliant!!

Tuthilltown Spirits
Gardiner, New York

As The Malt Advocate headline stated...
Tuthilltown Distillery:
Yankee Ingenuity At Its Whiskey Best

This distillery can be best described as being a new-wave micro or craft or artisan distillery. Started in 2001 by Brian Lee & Ralph Erenzo in a 220 year old gristmill in New York State, this is New York's first distillery since prohibition. Everything is done by hand, on a small scale, check out the bottle sizes but with stacks of loving care and
attention to detail.

Tuthilltown Hudson Baby Bourbon 350ml 46%
This is the whisky that made Tuthilltown famous.
It's 100% corn, pot distilled & small oak matured. The
distiller's express aim is for the consumer to taste corn!
According to the Spirits Review: Corn, oak, vanilla and
some fresh ginger notes with some sweetness to it.
Warming finish with fat oaky notes, balanced by vanilla
and sweetness of the corn.

Tuthilltown Hudson Four Grain Bourbon 350ml 46%
A more traditional bourbon mash bill for this richly flavoured whiskey: Corn, wheat, rye & malted barley. It tastes rich, very youthful but there's plenty of creamy vanilla oak. There's pepper from the rye, malt sweetness from the barley and creaminess from the wheat with a good amount of young spirit bite as well.

Tuthilltown Hudson Manhattan Rye 350ml 46%
100% rye whiskey and once you've tasted it, you will never
ever forget it. It's so intense & invigorating. Loads of black
pepper, cardamon and cloves. Perfect for the Manhattan it
was designed for!!

Tuthilltown Hudson New York Corn 350ml 46%
Pure, clear, 46%, 100% corn whiskey. Sweet, grassy with
a hint of peppermint.

Tuthilltown Rye 370ml 46%
The calmer version of the Hudson Mahattan Rye, still has
plenty of spice and grassy attack but there is also a hint of smoke as well. Very much a sippin whiskey...but it would make a very ace Sazerac.

You've got to hand it to James Broadway, who else could have put such a fine an eclectic mix of Italian wines and single malt whiskies in one bar/bottle shop. Simply breathtaking. Big selection of spirits both by the bottle and glass including four of the stunning Nikka Yoichi and Miyagikyou malts.

229 Gertrude Street, Fitzroy,

  The Gin Palace

This is one of those fabulous Melbourne bars that are tucked away in a basement far away from the madding crowd. Basically from the street it's just a door, but once you found it, your in for a real treat. Look out for Murray Pittman, an expert in all things bourbon. And guess what he is currently serving... George T. Stagg.

Baranows Bar & Cigar Lounge

Big chesterfields, big spirit list and big cigars. Wal & Ben Baranow are the cigar kings of Melbourne but Ben's knowledge of spirits & his spirit list is legendary, but the malt list is singularly superb, bordering on magnificent. Check out the the rare and highly collectible malts by the glass!.

Bistro Guillaume

This has to be one of the hottest places in Australia…have you seen how many reviews they have been getting? And all are good. And then there's the bar its downstairs from the bistro, Andy Waters is your man, it's dark, snug and very comfortable... and what a fabulous array of spirits, but pride of place are the malts. Great stuff guys.

Crown Casino Complex, Southbank Melbourne

  Restaurant Bottega

After a short time away, Rhys is back as chef, and if you ask him politely he'll give you a whisky and food experience to die for. It is so good to go to a full on, classy restaurant and get someone who knows their stuff about malts. Just beg Rhys to do his smokey eel ravioli. Great stuff.

What can I say that hasn't been said before…and what a joy it is: the customer is paramount, the food is sublime as it is exciting and the beverage list including the malts is quite unbelievable. Raul is the head sommelier and if he can't help you with your spirit needs over dinner, then nobody can.

Tarraleah Lodge

This is the ideal spot for a quiet dram while touring the wilds of Tasmania. The bar contains an excellent array of single malts that will entice even the hardened palate; the staff headed by Isabel Stevenson, are warm and friendly and so are bar surroundings. Look out for the Glenglassaugh 19, Macallan Travel series and the now rare Bladnoch 15 all poured by the glass.
