The Great Big Winter Catalogue |
| |
|
|
|
|
Well, it wasn't supposed to be like this! The catalogue I mean. It's way too big, far too many enticing, intriguing, delightful and of course, downright drinkable malts. But what could I do? It all arrived at once. But imagine my joy when I unpacked it...nothing was nicked...boy I love this job!
Now you may think that this edition looks a little familiar, well it is. I've gone back to my trusted friends in Scotland and asked them if they had anything new or anything left over from last year? Alex, Doug, Gordon, Michael and two new colleagues Derek and James all responded with a resounding yes!
So from this resounding response, I've selected a whole heap of new and very exciting malts along a new range of distillery bottlings. And best of all, the quality of the malts that these trusted Independents are delivering is fantastic. They certainly know their stuff! |
|
But there is a warning that comes with these malts…the way the industry is progressing in Scotland, private bottlings within a few years may be a thing of the past. Supply and price pressures mean that both big and small distillers are increasingly hanging onto their precious supplies. For me then, the Independents add a nice touch of spice to an increasingly robust and exciting industry. But as I've said before, you need to now about and to trust who is making these selections...so once again, let me introduce to you
ORDERING is always simple...

The Majesty That Is Adelphi... |
| |
|
|
|
|
| Alex Bruce from Adelphi called me out of the blue…"I've got my hands on some Ben Nevis single blend…interested?" Wow! Yes sir, bring it on. I had read about this remarkable single blend, but never, ever thought I'd be able to get my hands on some. So this gem leads off our latest Adelphi selections and look out for that Benrinnes as well. |

Adelphi Ben Nevis Single Blend 37yo Bourbon 700ml 50.9%
Yep, that's right it’s a blend...but it comes with one hell of a story and there were only 135 bottles produced! I'll let Charlie McLean & Alex Bruce explain…
"A welcome return to our 'single blend' - that will confuse the legislators who are currently tinkering with Scotch whisky definitions! Joseph Hobbs, a colourful Scots Canadian who had bought Ben Nevis Distillery just before WWII, installed a patent still there beside the pot stills in 1955, making both grain and malt whisky - hence the possibility of a blended whisky from a single distillery. It is fabulous! Deep amber in colour, with a nose of macerated plums, cherries and soft fruits, and a curious medicinal note behind (Friar's Balsam and eucalyptus), permeated by sandalwood. The flavour is sweet and medicinal at natural strength. Water makes it slightly 'piggy' for a moment, then it resumes its medicinal character (now joined by gun-stock oil), with boiled fruit sweets. The taste is sweet then dry with a long finish. Most unusual". |

Adelphi Benrinnes 1984 21yo Sherry 700ml 57.8%
Now here's a distillery that has just undergone a massive makeover. And about time too, I say! Big, full bodied, plenty of creamy oak but is held in balance, as Jim Murray says, "by the barley surging in gigantic waves". There's plenty of dried fruit spiciness but it's the texture of this dram that is to die for. |

Adelphi Clynelish 1993 14yo Bourbon 700ml 57%
I love Clynelish, so underrated but a beautifully poised whisky with background peat. But have a look at what Alex & Charlie have to say about it...
"This is drawn from a refill hogshead, so the distillery character emerges unmasked: fruit salad to start with (apples and pears, but also a hint of bananas and mandarin juice - sweet and fresh. Behind this a dusty scent of very pure chocolate (85% cocoa), which develops into liqueur chocolate after a while. Water brings up Clynelish's key-notes: scented wax, with a briny, mineral-like aroma, and then an elusive floral scent - lilies or perfume. Unctuously sweet to start, then crisply acidic, with a dry finish: well structured and balanced, with a medium length finish, and a development towards dry tablet". |

Adelphi Dalmore 1990 17yo Sherry 700ml 59.7%
I'm a bit of a sucker for big, mouthfilling whiskies, you know, the ones that fill every crevice of your mouth and this new offering from Alex does not disappoint. Matured in refilled sherry butts, there is plenty of dried fruits, nuts, sponge cake and even rice pudding flavours and Dalmore's noted oiliness but the palate is kept alive by some excellent lively spirit mid palate and a lingering chocolate aftertaste. First fill sherry butt, so hang onto your hats as this is the sherry monster. As Charlie McLean has put it, "The first nose is exquisite: thick Devon cream with soft fudge fruit & nut (raisins and almonds). As might be expected from such a cask, there is a distinct scent of match-box striker when water is added, but this soon blows off to reveal Highland Toffee, with a trace of braised fennel. It has a big, chewy, texture, and an overall sweetness to taste". Only 566 bottles produced.

Adelphi Linkwood 1989 18yo Sherry 700ml 55.6%
Linkwood, when was the last time you drammed down a Linkwood? While not often seen as an official, it is very rarely seen as an independent bottling. But Alex is onto something here.
"This example is from a first-fill, European oak puncheon, and has a gorgeous rose-wood hue as a result. The nose is subtly gingery. After a fruit-cake start, we began to think about ginger-bread and ginger snaps, and the whisky seemed to become sweeter in the glass, passing through brown sugar to molasses sugar - by which time we were detecting a soft leather tobacco pouch, filled with moist Virginia tobacco. The taste was of brown sugar, and quite tannic". |

As Alex told me on the phone, "Apart from two butts of 25yo that were released 1992, and the old 12yo in the Flora & Fauna series, Strathmill has never been bottled by its proprietor, and is uncommon in independent bottlings". And I agree with his quality assessment: this is a treat! The colour of old Sauternes, smelling of Madeira cake and glace cherries and tasting for all the world like coffee beans dipped in chocolate. Three offerings of Macallan, two that you would be familiar with and the third, is one hell of a new surprise package. So on pulling the cork, I was totally floored: my god it is so rich, fantastically long and what intensity with a nice bit of crunchy malt mid palate. Thankfully not too much overt apple flavours. Now Let Me Re-Introduce You An Old & Respected Friend... |
| |
| I've been working with Derek Hancock from Gordon & MacPhail for a number of years. The malts from this venerable and well respected firm have always been world class and dearly loved in Oz. When I caught up with Derek at last year's Whisky Convention, we both felt it was time that both the bottlings from MacPhail's and the super malts from their very own Benromach should once again adorn the shelves of whisky lovers across Australia. It's a small beginning, but I know it will grow. |
| |
|
Let's start with G&M's very own Speyside distillery, Benromach... |
| |
| Benromach Traditional 700ml 40%
I almost feel with this malt, is a return to some form of traditional values of the Speyside malt, because the good chaps at Benromach and Gordon & MacPhail are not afraid to use peat. I hear a lot of nonsense about Speyside whiskies being this and that, but if the truth be known, there is as much variation in in the history of malts from Speyside as there has been with any of the other regions of Scotland. Just remember, up until the 1950's , Macallan was a peated whisky!
And the addition of a modicum pf peat, say around 10ppm (as one pundit claims: a touch more than Springbank, a bit less than Bowmore!) and a touch of sherry maturation, around 20% adds a smokey zestiness and a citrus fruitiness to a very silky custard cream palate.

And the extra years just adds depth and a further degree of complexity to this very charming malt. |

On the other hand, the 1988, is crisply clean, showing lots of ripe apple and pear with a nice touch of malt and believe it or not, a slight smokey finish to it. |

There are very few nations that can claim an alcoholic beverage as their national symbol, but on mainland South America there are two: Guatemala with Ron Zacapa & Ron Botrán and then there is Nicaragua with their incomparable Ron Flor de Caña. No wood chips, no soleras, all bourbon barrel matured & thankfully they claim no additives have been used. And the biggest surprise...they claim to have been distilled seven (7) times!!! BTW it's Kosher too. |

Finally and at long last, Tequila has grown up and with Trago, the famed (or should that be infamous) spirit of Mexico can now be started to be taken seriously. The masters of Tequila, the Camarena's of Arandas in the highlands of Jalisco, Mexico, have used only 100% Webber Blue Agave, copper stills, good American oak and clean production techniques to create their high quality Silver (no oak maturation), Reposado (4 months in oak) and Anejo (18months in oak) Tequila's. |
