The long awaited third release of Springbank Distillerís current, oldest whisky. Once again, allocations are very small and it has totally sold out overseas. Overall, it's a remarkable whisky. Remarkable for its bright, almost luminescent colour (a very non-reactive American oak cask me thinks), remarkable for its very clean, lean, lemon citrus dominated nose. Shane reckons thereís a hint of earthiness (this will be the peat) in there as well plus a good dose of creamy American oak. On the palate, itís also remarkable for its initial feistiness but then the door opens up to let you into one seriously long, luxurious palate, where nothing is out of place. Malt, oak, alcohol and citrus fruit flavours are in complete harmony. I donít think Iíve seen a Longrow just so pure. In a word: zesty. In another: breathtaking. Whiskyfun rates it at 92pts with the comment, "extremely high quality. I canít see why Iíd come up with another score."

Here's my original notes from 2012!! "Now this has to be heaven for me...a single malt, peat and my all time favourite red, Burgundy...all in one package! This is the latest (2012) wood finish malt from J&A Mitchell. Yet to try it, so over to the the distillery... "Nose: Incredibly rich with wonderful aromas streaming out of the glass. American club soda, creamy chocolate eclairs, butter toffee popcorn, chocolate orange and cloves mix nicely with the dry smoke that is Longrow. Palate: Like a comfortable feather duvet, this whisky wraps itself around your palate enriching it with flavours of sweet treacle, creamy caramel sauce and highland toffee. It is incredibly oily yet spicy, similar to freshly ground mixed peppercorns, the smoke subtly evident throughout. Finish: Like a cloud of sweet smoke, lingering for a long while." Casks: 11 years refill bourbon, 3 years fresh burgundy hogsheads. Pic indicative only.

As Dave Lister would say, "brutal". Take a very young, highly peated, massively alcoholic Longrow and age it in used Angelo Gaja (the father of the modern Italian wine industry) French oak barriques that have been used for his famous Barolo wine (nebbiolo) and what you get is a blatantly aggressive, densely smokey and very meaty malt. And does it work? Wow does it work!! Breathtaking. 5 1/2 years in ex Bourbon oak, 1 1/2 years in ex Euro oak from Anjelo Gaja.

Brand new and what a beauty it is. Lean, clean and loaded up with peat. This whisky is intense and long with a hint of citrus fruits. As one pundit it put it, "A great entry-level offering from Longrow perfect for Islay fans looking for something a bit different." Bravo Longrow!

The Springbank whisky with an Aussie connection. Our very own Mr Shane K had a hand in this whiskies development, as he is the one who brokered a deal to send Angove's Longrow brand casks to Springbank. The original barrels had cabernet in them, hence the name "red" and the very distinctive colour of the malt: a bright red! 7 years in bourbon, 4 in red casks. I thought it was originally going to be called Longrow Longrow, but alas no. Sadly, no mention of the Aussie connection is on the label. BUT the dram is a beaut, loads of salt tang, embery peat and caramel creams. Just about sold out world wide. The official notes state, "Nose: A real treat. Sweet in the beginning; raspberry jam and hints of rose petal. As the nose develops it reveals a light peatiness, with cherries, red grapefruit and blood oranges. Palate: Oh there ľs the peat! Initially oaky and leathery with a little bit of tobacco and salt, the Cabernet Sauvignon influence appears later with some blackberries and cinnamon. A very chewy dram. Finish: Long and peaty. Definitely coastal in style, there is a touch of mellow fruitiness here too. "
