Now I am led to believe that this is final R&K from Springbank. This time those small 60 and 80 lt casks are used with Springbank's triple distilled whisky, Hazelburn. In Springbank's words, "Nose: An infusion of chocolate, honeycomb and dried fruit combine well with a malty undertone, before a rich creaminess develops. Palate: Elegant yet complex with a combination of spices, sweeter candy notes, butterscotch, marzipan and sugared almonds. A rich oily texture is derived from its maturation in small casks, giving the impression of a maturity beyond its 10 years. Finish: Long, robust and medium dry. An earthy oakiness is infused with sweet salty notes which go on and on."

Springbank Distiller's latest triple distilled, ex sherry cask matured, unpeated single malt. And I have to say that this is one sensational malt! And I mean that in its truest sense: the nose is subtly expressive, plenty of old, dark furniture notes, hints of dried orange zest, pepper, cardamom with a hint of bitter marmalade. Very supple, very classy with all the senses fully engaged. So bring on the palate. Fabulous oak: plenty of dried fruits, bitter orange that sits well with subtle malt. Initially sweet then the pepper and crisp spirit arrives at the end leaving a very intriguing, but lasting finish. Typical Springbank: lots of angles & crisp intensity as well as being just huge on the palate. Magic stuff.

Great review for this new release in 2017 from blogger Mark at Malt, "Velvety, if a little thin on the texture. Certainly not as oily as its sister brands, yet pleasant enough. Heavy on the charcoal, with blackened meats - and honey glaze. Indeed, an underlying meatiness here, drifting into gamey, grouse territory. Blackcurrants and elderberry or even Balsamic tartness to this, which actually works with that meatiness. Blackcurrant juice then begins to dominate. Rather creamy, with just enough bitterness from the wood to balance out. Ever-so-slight metallic tinge. Caramel notes, and eventually those dried fruits one would expect. Conclusions Opening day of the shooting season: gamey, smokey. Just a lovely whisky. Typical of some of the whiskies being released from Springbank of late, and that is something to be celebrated, as it's very much my cup of tea. I can have no shortage of this style of whisky in my cupboard."

This three pack, is the very first edition of this malt. All bourbon oak, triple distilled and is now a mainstay style within the Springbank range. And the taste? Just splendid.

The long awaited third release of Springbank Distillerís current, oldest whisky. Once again, allocations are very small and it has totally sold out overseas. Overall, it's a remarkable whisky. Remarkable for its bright, almost luminescent colour (a very non-reactive American oak cask me thinks), remarkable for its very clean, lean, lemon citrus dominated nose. Shane reckons thereís a hint of earthiness (this will be the peat) in there as well plus a good dose of creamy American oak. On the palate, itís also remarkable for its initial feistiness but then the door opens up to let you into one seriously long, luxurious palate, where nothing is out of place. Malt, oak, alcohol and citrus fruit flavours are in complete harmony. I donít think Iíve seen a Longrow just so pure. In a word: zesty. In another: breathtaking. Whiskyfun rates it at 92pts with the comment, "extremely high quality. I canít see why Iíd come up with another score."

The basic 10yo is back to its very best old self: this malt is bright and pleasingly salty, ex bourbon cask matured whisky with noticeable seaside & citrus fruit characters, along with a degree of complexity with balance, malt, oak, nutmeg & cinnamon & a salty tingle on the end. New for late 2017 and intriguingly, these Local Barley offerings are getting younger and younger all the time. Matured in 70% Bourbon and 30% Sherry with approximately 9000 bottles available worldwide. Now in the hard to find category. The barley was grown at West Beck farm, 4 miles from the distillery and for this edition, the popular distilling variety Belgravia, was used. According to Words Of Whisky, "Proper oily stuff. Sweet and citrus-y, with a light touch of brine, tobacco leaves and very soft peat smoke. A tad earthy. Some vanilla and honey too, but they are secondary. Not complex, but right up my alley. Lovely, lovely stuff."

Another gem from Springbank and once again, I don't expect this to last on the shelves very long. Official notes, "Our 2nd release of the Springbank Local Barley series uses barley from Aros Farm near Machrihanish airport, with the Barley type being the historical Bere Barley and bottled as an 11Y/O at 53.1%. We used 13 tonnes of Barley across 4 hectares - I will be perfectly honest with you guys, I have no idea how big a hectare is, let alone 4 of them, but it sounds like a lot. So after 11 years in 26 Bourbon casks there are now approximately 9,000 bottles available worldwide. Nose: Freshly baked bread with sweet notes of sun dried bananas to contrast with the salted caramel topping Taste: The promise given in the nose delivers, a lovely creaminess and sweetness of grapes, custard, honeycomb and marshmallow. Finish: ThereÔŅĹs a nutty quality about this, almonds, hazelnuts and walnuts as wellness an air of indulgence, rich and buttery with an elegant finish that keeps on giving. A true Campbeltown dram that needs to be opened and enjoyed amongst friends.

The 2009 release of the famous Wood Finishes range from Springbank. And this is a very classy edition to this already venerable range. 11 years in Madeira casks accounts sweetness on the nose, with notes of butter shortbread, demerara sugar, and chocolate orange. Look a little deeper and the astounding complexity of the flavours from the Madeira casks become apparent. On the palate there's plenty of brown sugar, hot chocolate, a hint of mint and butter and the gentlest hint of peat spice. Nice one!

This is from the 2012 Wood Expression release from Springbank. It's a six and six....six years bourbon, six years in "fresh" Calvados (French apple brandy) casks. In their words, "Nose - The influence of the Calvados casks is immediately apparent, with notes of green apples, citrus fruits and sweet toffee showing themselves in the beginning. Vanilla essence, pears and some gentle spice come later. Palate - A very lively dram at cask strength. Black pepper and rhubarb give way to demerara sugar, green grapes, a touch of cinnamon and a little bit of home-made fudge. This is an oily whisky for sure. Finish - Orange marmalade, gooseberries and a pleasant, dry, peatiness leave a lasting impression."

The release and was thought to be the last in Springbank's Wood Finish range. As Whisky Notes have said : "This is a Springbank limited release, distilled in May of 1997. It was matured in refill bourbon barrels, then finished in fresh claret (Bordeaux) casks for 3 years and then another 2 years in re-charred casks (to smooth out the wine influence)." This is a very tasty, in fact a very bright Springer without too much direct wine influence. The nose is aromatic while the distinct taste of dark cherries, Springbank's saltiness and a hint of gritty wood tannins make for a mighty fine dram. Here's what Ryan Marshman said, "Find one at any cost, then consume somewhere comfortable and dark, whilst listening to some Brian Jonestown Massacre. Bliss. Score: 96"

The new for 2016 release of Springbank's organic barley malt and now a year older. To be certified organic, the oak had to be new. With Springbank, this was not going to happen. And bravo for the sherry casks! From WhiskyNotes, "A nicely sherried variation on last yearÔŅĹs Green 12yo. ItÔŅĹs definitely less austere this time, with more fruity roundness. More towards the 18 Year Old profile." While the distillery describes it as, "The palate is fruity with raisins and orange zest to the fore. Marzipan, vanilla and soft sherry notes are also present."

The last time Springbank released a Bourbon Wood was in 2003, so welcome back old friend. As you could imagine, there's plenty of sweet oak character in this dram but underneath the Springbank saltiness and gentle smokiness shines through. Official notes read, " Yogurt and thick cream continue from the nose with an introduction of honey, syrup and liquorice. Gentle notes and sweet apples, almonds and dried bananas. A light dusting of icing sugar and lemon zest. A touch of smoke and dry peat builds with a gentle sea breeze from Campbeltown Loch. Briny and light mineral flavours complete this excellent dram." Only 9,000 bottles released and sold out world-wide.

The 15yo shows a change in tack for Springbank, as this has a big dose of sherry oak going through still relatively dry and intensive, but mid palate the dark chocolate and rich toffee notes kick in. Like a storm gathering off the Kintyre coast. Dark & ominous.

This 2015 release looks such a gem: Aged Springbank, fully matured in sherry oak. Only 9,120 bottle produced world wide. In their worlds, "Nose: A sherry explosion with winter fruits, spicy gingerbread and a hint of peat. Palate: A winter warmer. Dark orange chocolate, Christmas cake and brandy snaps. Honey and spices develop over time. Finish: The finish is long and smooth. Espresso coffee, liquorice, marzipan and sherry conclude the tickling of the taste buds."

Medium to full bodied style, matured in both ex sherry (80%) and ex bourbon casks. Only 7800 bottles produced and now generally in short supply worldwide! This malt is all about precision & refinement...nothing is out of place: from the restrained nose of fruit cake with marzipan and a hint of pine smoke to the very long, lightly peated, crisply malty & fruity palate & dry smokey finish, this malt hums. And keeps on humming for quite some time. Tasting notes from the distillery as well: Nose: Full of authority. Rich and creamy at first, the nose develops to reveal vanilla, ripe fruits and marzipan before hints of sherbet, almonds and strawberries tempt you onwards to the first mouthful. Palate: A classic full-bodied dram. Thick and oily in texture with an extremely fruity and mellow taste which gives way to a sweet liquorice and aniseed flavour as it opens up. Hints of liquorice and aniseed. Finish: Sweet and chocolaty with some coconut, the finish is long and consistent with a pleasant smokey tingle.

RARE It's been a very long time between drinks as they. It really has been quite some time since the distillery has been able to release a 21yo again. I suspect there is a very intriguing story out there about why older Springers have not been released for quite some time. Before we get to this beauty a WARNING! Do not expect a copy of the old 21yo. This is a completely different beast. For me, it's dry, intensive and complex. No big, rich, sweetly raisined fruit in this dram, it's half way between being lean and sweet. As one blogger so rightly stated, "this is the modern Springbank austerity (minerals, brine & wax)" showing here. Background peat. But the flavour just lasts and lasts. More detailed notes to follow. And what's with the garish, gold lame packaging!! What were they thinking of?

Well it certainly has been a long time coming. After all the shenanigans of the past 20 years at Springbank, finally they have their flagship back. And look at the packaging!! This dram has been matured in a combination of bourbon and sherry casks before being married in port casks for the final few months of maturation. Only 1,200 bottles were released for worldwide distribution. The official notes read, "Nose: The nose is rich with a peated port influence. Itís redolent of the dunnage warehouse in which it was matured. Fruity too, but this time berries to the fore: blackberries, cranberries and strawberries. Palate: The port wine influence is perfectly balanced with flavours of sherry, plum jam, blood oranges and pink grapefruit. Finish: The finish is long, soft and elegant, with earthy, peaty and woody qualities."
