ISLAY
Douglas Laing Big Peat Islay Blended Malt Whisky 40ppm
700ml 46.00%
  Ret
$140.00

A blended whisky that is surprisingly made up from single malts from Coal Ila, Bowmore, Ardbeg and Port Ellen! Heavy smoke and cut grass as one pundit put it. And for Christmas 2018 - every bottle gets a free Neat Whisky glass!!

Kilchoman 2009 5yo Loch Gorm Oloroso Sherry Cask
700ml 46.00%
  Ret
$180.00

Another early release of the full sherry matured Kichoman. Acording to one major retailer, "Crumbly biscuits and vanilla, an inviting pair to open up a palate. This is swiftly followed by smoky peat once again, which stays with you through the Sherry soaked berries until the finish."

Kilchoman Spring 2010 Release
700ml 46.00%
  Ret
$175.00

I wrote this some time ago, "Small, artsinal, farm based distillery turning out 100,000lts of spirit annually from barley grown on the farm. This was Kilchomas third release since opening. Oily and very smokey, mainly matured in bourbon oak." Today in 2018 they are now aiming to produce over 450,000 litres of alc a year! Boy, how they have grown up!

Kilchoman Spring 2011 Release
700ml 46.00%
  Ret
$175.00

Small, artsinal, farm based distillery turning out 100,000lts of spirit annually from barley grown on the farm. This was Kilchomas fourth release since opening and was a mix of bourbon and sherry oak. In 2018, they have just about quadrupled their output.

Kilchoman Summer 3yo 2010 Release
700ml 46.00%
  Ret
$175.00

A very early release and matured in ex bourbon barrels courtesy of Buffalo Trace. Notes from a major retailer, "The palate is soft and creamy from the get go building with a mildly tingly burst of sweet spice. Off dry flavours of malt are delivered in a slightly oily, soft, peaty blanket. Delicate spices persist with a hint of liquorice returning into the very lengthy aftertaste. Youthful, delicious whisky. " Not bad for such a young whisky.

Lagavulin 12yo Cask Strength 2004 Release
700ml 58.20%

POA

This is now one for the collectors to hunt out. But boy, what a dram! Explosive, massively peated and undeniably one of the most complex malts I tried in years.

Lagavulin 1996 12yo Distillers Edition
700ml 43.00%
  Ret
$230.00

This is the 2012 release of this richly sherried (PX sherry that is) and peaty dram. Christmas cake, rum, chocolate and a bonfire. And with such splendid balance too.

Lagavulin 1999 15yo Distillers Edition
700ml 43.00%
  Ret
$210.00

It's always a joy to see the famed and richly flavoured Lagavulin finished in PX sherry oak. Bottled in 2015, so it's either a 15 or 16yo, From WhiskySaga, "Rich in sweetness at first, then it sort of switches gears and I find dry ashes and pepper. Amazingly it switches again and theres notes of fruit juices citrus, melon and pineapple."

Laphroaig 15yo
700ml 43.00%
  Ret
POA

700ml version of the milder, fuller flavoured, sherry influenced Laphroaig, both the peat and iodine are toned down a tad, but I have to admit, I think it works a treat.

Laphroaig PX Cask Triple Matured 200 Years Edition
1000ml 48.00%
  Ret
$250.00

I've always been taken by sherried smoke monsters, especially in litre bottles. Triple matured I here you say? Initially in American oak and then in quarter casks before a final finishing period in ex-Pedro Ximenez sherry casks. From Jim Murray in 2015, " This ultra sweet wine is often paired with smokey malt, often with disastrous consequences. Here it has worked, but only because the PX has been controlled itself by absolutely outstanding oak. And the ability of the smoke to take on several roles and personas simultaneously. A quite beautiful whisky and unquestionably one of the great malts of the year...in spite of itself. 96 points."

Whisky & Co Whisky Antique Ardbeg 1998 16yo Sherry Cask 15005
700ml 56.90%
  Ret
$790.00

A collaboration between two private bottlers. And what a find! Bottled by Malts Of Scotland in 2015 with only 150 bottles being released.

ISLANDS
Cadenhead Single Cask Highland Park 1996 20yo
700ml 50.60%
  Ret
$299.00

A somewhat curious HP as they notes don't really mention the classic peat/honey combo that HP used to bang on about. I've seen modern versions, very similar to this one. Distilled 1996, bottled 2016, ex Bourbon cask, out-turn: 258 bottles. From Mr Cadenhead, Mark Watt, "A little lemon, vanilla, lots of cream, apple crumble, icing sugar and pear tart...a very coastal finish."

Cadenhead Small Batch Arran 1997 19yo
700ml 52.40%
  Ret
$189.00

Aaah, an aged Arran that was laid down in the very days of what was a very new distillery. Distilled in 1997, bottled in 2016, matured in 1 x ex Boubon cask and 1 x sherry cask. Out-tun: 486 bottles. I love the official notes, "Fruit pudding, vanilla, plum jam and rich creamy chocolate, cofffee liqueur." Not your standard tasting note for an Arran malt.

Cadenhead Small Batch Highland Park 1990 25yo
700ml 50.60%
  Ret
$499.00

This is a vatting of two bourbon hogsheads and as Serge Valentin declares, "Sharp, waxy, citrusy, herbal, very much focused, well-chiselled, slightly smoky And theres this bitterness that keeps it a little intellectual. 91pts " noting that he can't understand why the distillery got rid of these casks.

Highland Park 12yo Old Bottling
700ml 40.00%
  Ret
$180.00

Here's an old note from a few years ago for this older bottling,..""When you talk about the world of whisky or even for that matter the bigger world of oak aged spirits, somewhere in the conversation the name Highland Park will always crop up. The HP 12 still remains one of the most mildly mannered but exquisitely tasty single malts on the shelf. The honey sweetness matches up so well with the bonfire qualities of the peat." Pic indicative only.

Highland Park 15yo
700ml 40.00%
  Ret
$250.00

This is an older version of the famed Highland Park spirit. Loads of honey, that hallmark whiff of smoke along with a good dose of sherry oak.

Highland Park 18yo
700ml 43.00%
  Ret
$290.00

And older bottling of this Aussie favourite. Here are some of my original notes, "Some say that this is best malt in the world, others say that it is the only malt worth drinking in the world and some say that there are certainly some whisky whackers out there. And me? An absolute champion of poise, elegance and that famous whiff of smoke. Murray rated it at 95.5pts.

Ledaig 18yo Small Batch Spanish Sherry Wood Finish
700ml 46.30%
  Ret
$310.00

Oh boy! What a treat this is when I opened up the carton to see for the first time (???) a well aged, fully peated Ledaig with a good dose of Spanish oak in it. Wowsers!! Until I try it, here are their words, "This sought after peated Hebridean style Single Malt Scotch Whisky balances rich and fruity, sherried smokiness with seaweed and light creosote that allows for a long and quite pungent finish with more smoke and a hint of liquorice and sea spray."

Scapa Glansa GL04
700ml 40.00%
  Ret
$170.00

So nice to see Scapa back on the shelves in Oz. This 10/2017 release of this gentle Orcadian is all American oak matured and then the spirit is further matured in casks that had a peaty malt in it. So there is a big dose of creamy oak, a touch of fruitiness, mainly dark fruits and then what Gavin Smith describes as mild wood smoke, kicks in. Also notes from Whisky Boys, "Vanilla ice cream, singed honey and orange glazed ham, a little oak peeping in, sweet smoke from a beach bonfire, a feel of runny caramel, loads of well ripened tropical fruits."

Scapa Skiren
700ml 40.00%
  Ret
$160.00

This new to Oz but 2017 release is the sister malt to the mildly smoky Glansa. What sets Skiren apart, is that it is matured in first fill American oak. So expect a big dose of creamy, coconut flavoured oak on a bed of mildly tasting malt and spirit. From Edinburgh whisky blog, "Initial tropical notes remind me of fruit salad sweets, which give way to light vanilla, creamy fudge, manuka honey and pine wood."
