Great Southern Distillery Tiger Snake Batch 2 Sour Mash Australian Whiskey
700ml 43.00%
  Ret
$140.00

Possibly the first properly made Bourbon style whiskey in Australia and it comes from none other than Cameron Syme's rather excellent Great Southern Distillery in Albany, WA. The mash bill is corn, rye and malted barley and of course the oak is all new American. This is their second release, loads of vanilla oak and sweet fudge flavours.

Southern Coast Distillers Batch 001 Single Malt Whisky
700ml 46.00%
  Ret
$770.00

CLOSED DISTILLERY The whisky that gave the Australian world a great big wake up call. So much flavour, depth, richness, flavour and substance. Cask #22 was filled into an American oak port cask, re-made and re-furbished from a larger cask in October 2007. It was botted at 46% in time for the MWSoA 2010 Malt Whisky Awards where it won a credible bronze medal. Murray loved it, scoring it 92.5pts, "fabulous first effort...magnificently crisp, sugar coated barley. Some fabulous oils counter the firm, spicy nature..." In their words, "alcohol supports sweet toffee, charred nuts, toffee and some bitter chocolate, nice mouthfeel good length. " Now sadly a silent still!!!

Southern Coast Distillers Batch 005 Single Malt Whisky
700ml 46.00%
  Ret
$770.00

Another new one! Loads of toffee and ginger spice, very rich and glyceroly on the palate, loads of rich malt, oranges and coconut and raw fresh oak. Expressive, engaging. Matured in heavily toasted sherry casks made from American oak. Amazing for a three year old!! In their words, "Nose: Chocolate orange liqueur, toffee, wood (meranti, cedar), dried leaves, Seville orange, orange blossom, fruit, leather, barbequed orange, orange toffee, dark chocolate. Palate: Syrupy, woody, warm spirit, oak, orange liqueur, coconut rumballs. Finish: Cream & smoked orange, some leafy and leathery tannins and some cleansing citrus pith. Comment: lots of orange and chocolate singing in a deep register clean & classy." Pic indicative only.

Possibly the first properly made Bourbon style whiskey in Australia and it comes from none other than Cameron Syme's rather excellent Great Southern Distillery in Albany, WA. The mash bill is corn, rye and malted barley and of course the oak is all new American. This is their sixth release, once again loads of vanilla oak and sweet fudge flavours.

Great Southern Limeburners M209 Peated
700ml 48.00%
  Ret
$290.00

A very limited release from the chaps at Great Southern Distillery. A relatively young whisky with a very moderate dose of peated malt. The malt is grainy and crunchy, the oak being American, delivers a good dose of creaminess to the nose but the peat doesn't show until you get it on the palate. Great length, lively spirit with a touch of saltiness, crisp malt and then you get the gentle dryness of the spicily smokiness of the peat. And there is a nice touch of lingering honey sweetness at the end. Nice one!

Great Southern Limeburners M29 Australian Tokay Cask
700ml 43.00%
  Ret
$300.00

From way out West and now, one of the longer established new style Aussie distillers. Big rich style with plenty of fruitiness from the tokay cask. M29 suggests and early release. Pic available upon request.

Southern Coast Distillers 2006 9yo French Oak TOWC Cask 12
700ml 50.00%
  Ret
$600.00

I had one opportunity and it was a yes or no situation, "Would I like to bottle some more Southern Coast for the last time?" asked Mr Scmidt. "Hell Yeh!!" Came the instant reply. There are two really great whisky producers in Aust and the old Southern Coast is one of them. Cask 12 is so very Southern Coast. Loads of barley sugar, sweet, lush oak with a hint of citrus. Long palate, intensive but balanced and then the French oak adds a nice surprise of wood spice to this complex whisky. And look at the age! Brilliant stuff Mr S.

Southern Coast Distillers 2007 5yo Batch 006 Single Malt Whisky
700ml 46.00%
  Ret
$700.00

CLOSED DISTILLERY Just been bottled (May 2012) and after 6 different bottlings, the South Coast Distillers can now boast a definite house style...rich fruit cake. The spirit quality is excellent as it is both rich, sweet and clean, and the oak handling is superb. Some rough tasting notes from yours truly: Big lift of violet crumble bars, honeycombe, spicy oak on the nose. The palate is fat, rich but just a tad short, plenty of creamy malt and vanilla oak. The finish is sweet and long lasting, plenty of lingering spiced honey. . Official notes, "Nose: Fruity and nutty; muscovado sugar and sugared peanuts with fresh cut apricots and mandarin. Initially has rum/rockmelon/scorched paper note but deepens into briny walnuts and white oak along with darker fruits; dried apricots. Palate: rum soaked fruit early then chestnuts and smoked almonds kick in along with wine and brine; where the hell does that saltiness come from and the scorched peanuts and the warm walnut skin finish? Finish: Buttery, orange peel, charred/roasted nuts, some wood tannins and furry bitters. Comment: even tastes slightly peated; slightly furry. Just keeps getting better in the glass. Sure as hell isnt scotch its better!"

Southern Coast Distillers 2008 7yo Port TOWC Cask 21
700ml 50.00%
  Ret
$600.00

What a treat it is to see Southern Coast back in bottle. The company has gone, but soon to rise in another guise but this is the original and from what I tasted, it certainly lives up to its now legendary reputation. This well aged Aussie is a treat. I wouldn't bottle it if it wasn't! Big dark and brooding in colour, classic SCD nose that is so lush and sweet and so well balanced. Once again SCD's famed SA Cooperage American oak casks that have had Aussie port in them, come up a treat: Long palate, intense alcohol, well integrated oak and barley that leave a the palate sweetly malty and oaky with a good dash of mandarin flavours. What treat from one of the past greats of modern Aussie distilling. Ace!

Southern Coast Distillers 2010 5yo American Oak Refill TOWC Cask 18.1
700ml 50.00%
  Ret
$600.00

There are two really great whisky producers in Aust and the old Southern Coast is one of them. Cask 18.1 (how do they come up with these numbers?) is the gentlest out of the trio. Sweet maltiness, hallmark barley sugar flavours with lush vanillin oak, but there is a hint of brazil nuts and citrus fruit flavours. Balanced and long.

Southern Coast Distillers 2011 4yo American Oak Port TOWC Cask 20.1
700ml 50.00%
  Ret
$600.00

There are two really great whisky producers in Aust and the old Southern Coast is one of them. Cask 20.1 is the fruitiest and brightest out of the trio. You can certainly taste the port's pleasing influence on this dram. Rich oak and malt tasting as cream caramel then the oak spice and fruitiness kicks in, it's flowery, citrus fruity. The palate is long and narrow, the alcohol is assertive, you could almost describe it as nervy. Great stuff!

Southern Coast Distillers 2011 4yo PX Sherry TOWC Cask 43
700ml 65.90%

What a treat it is to see Southern Coast back in bottle. The company has gone, but soon to rise in another guise but this is the original and from what I tasted, it certainly lives up to its now legendary reputation. This is a youngster and for the first time its bottled at cask strength. But as we have seen in the past, a combination of warm temperatures and careful and dare I say, expert oak handling has bought this spirit up a treat. American oak that has had Aussie PX sherry in it with the casks made at SA Cooperage. And the taste? Medium to deep gold in colour (no caramel here!) with a big, luscious sweetly malty nose, chocked up with sweet sherry and SCD's hallmark barley sugar flavours. And then the palate arrives: Again, long, lush and sweet, loads of sherry and Seville orange flavours and creamy malt and oak. The spirit is bright but is held in check by the malt and oak and it just lingers. Big ace from me! Welcome back, dear old friend.

Southern Coast Distillers Batch 007 Single Malt Whisky

It just gets better and better. This absolute youngster, 7 1/2 yo, is absolutely amazing, and believe it or not I've seen it before in its extreme infancy. Then, when it was 15 months old, I made the very firm comment that this malt was ready to go, it was so lush, fruity and loaded up with oak. But the distiller, Ian Schmidt, held his nerve and kept it in cask for another 3 or 4 years. And his judgement was so totally correct. This malt is extraordinary. The nose is just so pure, complex and balanced. Spicy (cinnamon, mixed spice) oak, raisined fruit with hints of Summer fruits and crisp malt. The nose alone is just so inviting. Then comes the taste: Rich and lush entry, slightly oily & viscous with the oak and malt being crisp. Theres that kitchen spice again with nice dose of toffee. The spirit is lively and drives these flavours down the palate. A pleasantly oaky and raisined fruit finish, that lasts and last. Extremely limited but a new benchmark for Aussie malts!

RUM
Southern Coast Rum Batch 01R
700ml 46.00%
  Ret
$290.00

CLOSED DISTILLERY From the Adelaide based Southern Coast Distillers comes this cracking and gutsy rum. Filled into a re-made and re-furbished, very heavily charred port cask made from American oak in May 2008 this cask filled 180 bottles at 46% in April 2010. There was a very long fermentation using a wine yeast and Queensland molasses with acid balance provided by citrus fruit. In their words, "Nose: Fruit juice and fresh coriander, spiced apple toffee, brown sugar rockmelon/ and ether/ isopropanol alcohol/acetone, gets fruitier with sultanas, raisins apricot nectar. Lots of higher alcohols lovely clean spirit, 20 Palate: fruity, syrupy, oily and like brandy soaked apricots, hot spirit, lots of raisins, sour melon with raisin and sultana slab. Finish: lingering raisins, ether, rockmelon and apricots, melon and fruit and nut mix, ether in the tail, along with paper and bamboo/sugarcane. Ether etc really hang around, warming and fruity spirit. Balance: Nice all the way through with the palate the star. The rest provided a nice support act." As distiller Ian Schmidt says, "rum is not just for Queenslanders"! SALE Pic indicative only
