SPEYSIDE
Aberlour 18yo
700ml 43.00%
  Ret
$320.00

Love Aberlour, love sherry malts, so the combo of the two I just couldn't go past. Here's what John Hansell at The Malt Advocate wrote, "Once again, the sherry is prominent throughout, with its lush fruit, velvety texture, and sweet demeanor. But its not cloying or sappy Rich, silky smooth, satisfying finish. Very impressive. The Aberlour 18 year olds reputation remains intact!: 91pts." And from Tom Canavan, "A lovely, confident, satisfying, after-dinner Aberlour. Sherried Speyside at its best."

Cadenhead Single Cask Glen Spey 1995 23yo
700ml 57.30%
  Ret
$229.00

A Diageo distillery that really does live up to the claim of Scotland's least known distillery. Not as if it is a youngster: founded 1878, or with a tiny output: approx 1.4 million litres annually or located way out in the hard to find wilds: it is surrounded by Glen Grant, Glenrothes and Speyburn. It just doesn't have a presence at all. So, this makes it intriguing. I just want to try it. Official notes read, "Some kiwi mixed in with notes of caramel, peshwari naan and melted butter. Grows thicker and heavier with more chocolate and rhubarb flavours." American oak matured, 222 bottles released.

Cadenhead Single Cask Speyside 1991 27yo
700ml 48.60%
  Ret
$299.00

A curious malt from a curious distillery as it is one of the newer distilleries in Speyside, as it was only completed in 1987! So to see one at this age is quite stunning, considering it was the early days of distilling. The official notes read, "Vine tomatoes, honeycomb and olive oil with a strawberry coulis, ginger ale and clove oil finish." As I said, a very curious malt. American oak matured, 300 bottles released.

Cadenhead Small Batch 175th Speyside 1991 25yo
700ml 51.00%
  Ret
$229.00

A well aged dram from a distillery that was only built in the 1970's. So once again I ask the question: Who has ever tried a malt from this distillery? I have and it was in Feb 2018: supple and rich. Official notes read, "polished oak, red cherries, touches of granite." Only 624 bottles released.

Cadenhead Small Batch Aultmore 2006 12yo
700ml 57.40%
  Ret
$139.00

Ahhh, such a familiar story. Drinks giant DCL, the modern day Diageo, uses this Speyside distillery for its blend trade. But in the late 1990's, then sells it off to John Dewarrs and Sons (aka Bacardi) and it is the new owners that breath life and single malts into this old plant. This Cadenhead bottling comes only two years after Dewarrs launch their first single malt. Cadenhead notes read, "Watermelon, pineapple juice, clotted cream.." All American oak, 1044 bottles released.

Cadenhead Small Batch Benriach 2008 10yo
700ml 57.60%
  Ret
$139.00

This tasty Speysider comes from the era when Mr Billie Walker owned and I have to say, revitalised the distillery. This offering has been described by Cadenhead as, "long and drying, earthy and flinty" which is kind of typical of the distilleries official style. They also note that there is a phenolic note about it, ie a hint of smokiness. All bourbon oak, 534 bottles released.

Cadenhead Small Batch Craigallachie 2007 11yo
700ml 54.00%
  Ret
$139.00

A big Speyside distillery that since Dewras took control of it in 1998 has flourished from the early 2000's in the single malt market. The spirit is also well-know for it's "whiff of smoke". So what do we have here with this young Cadenhead bottling? "Paprika, pecans and honey" so the Cadenhead notes state. They also declare that the nose smells of "millionaire shortcake." Really! All American oak, 834 bottles released.

Cadenhead Small Batch Dailuaine 2008 10yo
700ml 59.80%
  Ret
$139.00

I very much have a soft spot for Dailuaine (Dal-Yoo-Un) as I rank it's spirit richness alongside Macallan, Glendronach and Glengoyne. But I suspect this youngster is a little more lively that I anticipated. Very sadly official bottlings are few and far between, so bravo Cadenhead for getting hold of some the most delightful spirit in Speyside. Official notes read, "Soft grassy notes, caramel, faint allspice. Hints of coconut along with butterscotch and coffee beans." All American oak, 786 bottles released.

Cadenhead Small Batch Glen Spey 1997 22yo
700ml 57.90%
  Ret
$219.00

Glen_Spey, the distillery that supplies J&B Rare with all its malt whisky. So there is hardly any official releases. Thank goodness for Wm Cadenhead! Their notes read, "Nose: Grassy notes and porridge move to vanilla pods. Flavour: Quite peppery. Grassy notes continue before grapefruit comes through. Finish: Long and zesty with lemongrass."

Cadenhead Small Batch Glen Spey 2001 16yo
700ml 54.00%
  Ret
$152.00

From a couple of limited releases, we hardly ever see Glen_Spey in Australia. It's a major component of J&B Rare blended whisky. Cadenhead notes read, "Nose: Fresh nose of juicy green apples, cut grass and hint of cayenne pepper to add some warmth. Taste: Grapefruit and coconut, with marzipan. Finish: Butter popcorn, sweet chilli sauce and stewed apples."

Cadenhead Small Batch Speyburn 2008 9yo
700ml 55.60%
  Ret
$139.00

Popular in the USA but rarely seen in Oz. Cadenhead notes read, "Nose: Freshly cut grass, clementines, spearmint leaves. Flavour: Crunchy honeycomb, wood oil, foam bananas. Finish: Menthol, pineapple sweets, deep fried seaweed."

Cadenhead Small Batch Speyside 1991 24yo
700ml 50.50%
  Ret
$229.00

One of the newer distillery's in Speyside, as it was only completed in 1987! So to see one at this age is quite stunning. From Cadenheads, "The palate is rather good as we get to discover how well balanced drams from this great distillery can be. A nice soft slight creaminess, with sweet toffee apples and caramel liqueur coat the palate." Only 630 bottles released, all bourbon oak matured.

Cadenhead Small Batch Strathmill 1991 27yo
700ml 51.20%
  Ret
$299.00

Another Diageo owned distillery that remains quite hidden, both geographically, it's in an out of the way spot in Speyside and from malt sales, as most of its output still goes into the J&B blend. So thank you Cadenheads for being patient and releasing a such an elderly malt from this little know distillery. Hang on! Didn't I write this for the Single Cask? Bugga me I did. This Small Batch comes from three casks, with Cadenheads declaring, "Salted caramel, toffee apples with a hint of cloves. Pineapple in syrup, lemon drizzle cake and popping candy." All American oak matured, 678 bottles released.

Cadenhead Speyburn 2008 10yo
700ml 46.00%
  Ret
$119.00

A big distillery that probably not many people in Australia would have heard of. But I was quite surprised to read that the output of this distillery approached 4.5 million litres annually. That's surprisingly quite big. Vanilla, nuts and spice are the hallmarks of this spirit. All bourbon oak matured, outturn is a miserly 348 bottles and the taste? According to Cadenheads, "Chocolate truffles, orange sweets and aniseed. Cinnamon and wood spice finish."

Hart Bros Ballindalloch 1967 35yo
700ml 48.50%
  Ret
$850.00

So who or what is Ballindalloch? Let me give you a clue...it's from Speyside and it's called...Glenffffff....But look at the age and the date of the distillation. What an historic treasure. Pic coming soon.

Spencer Collings Imperial Tribute Blended Single Malt Whisky
700ml 46.00%
  Ret
$290.00

GIFT No, it's not about the British Empire, the name goes way back further to when the Romans had a go at organising the poms and the celts. Ever read anything about the Eagle Of The 9th? A great tale about imperial over extension. So, meet Mike Collings, ex Diageo heavyweight, responsible for the introduction of the Distillers range, Walker Blue Label and the scandalous Loch Dhu amongst other things to the whisky world. Now he's turned his hand to creating his own unique style of malt. Imperial Tribute is a blended single malt, mainly sourced from Speyside and is a melange of 10, 20, 30 and 40 year old malts with a good dose of sherry oak in the medley. And the taste? Sublimely rich, balanced and oh, so very long. The alcohol keeps it lively and there's enough kitchen spice and dried fruits to keep you intrigued. The finish is lingering barley sugar, ginger and a distinct dryness. And best of all? You get to personalise the bottle and the certificate at no extra cost! So as a luxury gift for Christmas or just for your own private collection, Imperial tribute is a gem. *** WE WILL EMAIL YOU A PERSON ALISATION FORM ONCE ORDER IS PLACED. ****Please allow three (5) days before we can send out. Glendronach 25yo Grandeur Batch 007 Oloroso Sherry Casks
700ml 50.60%
  Ret
$1500.00

This is the 2016 release for Australia of the famed and desired Grandeur. Now a 25yo but only 1180 bottles released worldwide. And this note from the Whisky Ranter blogger who doesn't "love" Speyside whiskies, "Stewed plums, dry spices, almonds and even cocoa kept resurfacing and falling back into the depths of sherried darkness with a puff of sweet cigar smoke seeing them all off. In the mouth the spirit seemed to be coalescing around an uncompromisingly spicy centre of cloves, cardamon, and black pepper until an astringent blip halted the promising development. On the midpalate fresh and creamy tropical fruits single-handedly prevailed over somewhat obstinate tannins and spices. The finish was as big as it was complex: the juiciness of red berries, spiciness of stewed plum compote, dryness of dark chocolate, sweetness of honeycomb"

BLENDED MALT WHISKY
Spencer Collings Founders Reserve 10yo Blended Malt Whisky
700ml 54.80%
  Ret
$170.00

This rather splendid blended single malt whisky, comes from that superstar marketer, who working for DCL/UDV in the 1980's, was responsible for creation and launch of UDV's Classic Malt range and then went on to create other masterpieces including Johnnie Blue Label. So he knows what he is doing and his Founders Reserve is a treat. The original Speyside and Islay single malt whiskies were matured in refill sherry butts of approx 105 Imperial gallons. The Northern Highlands was matured in a second fill American oak Bourbon barrel of 50 US gallons. The Speyside & Islay whiskies are then transferred to a first fill Madeira barriques of approx 49 Imperial gallons. And the taste: Melting richness, a melange of dried fruits, Madeira oak spiciness with a crisp dry finish. Long and highly balanced. Bravo Mr C!!
