Hazelburn 2003 13yo Oloroso Sherry Wood
700ml 47.10%
  Ret
$159.00

Great review for this new release in 2017 from blogger Mark at Malt, "Velvety, if a little thin on the texture. Certainly not as oily as its sister brands, yet pleasant enough. Heavy on the charcoal, with blackened meats - and honey glaze. Indeed, an underlying meatiness here, drifting into gamey, grouse territory. Blackcurrants and elderberry or even Balsamic tartness to this, which actually works with that meatiness. Blackcurrant juice then begins to dominate. Rather creamy, with just enough bitterness from the wood to balance out. Ever-so-slight metallic tinge. Caramel notes, and eventually those dried fruits one would expect. Conclusions Opening day of the shooting season: gamey, smokey. Just a lovely whisky. Typical of some of the whiskies being released from Springbank of late, and that is something to be celebrated, as it's very much my cup of tea. I can have no shortage of this style of whisky in my cupboard."

Hazelburn 2004 13yo Oloroso Sherry Wood
700ml 47.40%
  Ret
$159.00

This is a new 2018 release of Springbank's tasty triple distilled whisky. And this one gets the full sherry experience: delightfully full, rich and creamy with hints of exotic sweet meats.  Triple distilled using a mix of first-fill and refill sherry casks.

Hazelburn 2004 14yo Oloroso Sherry Wood
700ml 49.30%
  Ret
$159.00

It would seem that the Hazelburn Oloroso sherry series seems yet to continue. So bravo Hazelburn, I like the style and flavour these drams have been giving. Triple distilled and fully matured in sherry oak as the official notes state, "Fruit and nut chocolate, raisins and almonds. Followed by summer fruits, dark chocolate and pecan pie." While Archer at WhiskyBase reports, "You could almost think that you have a down-diluted batch of the 12 CS in your glass. Mild pepper and rosemary and as a counterpoint to bitter honey and crème brulée.90/100."

Longrow 11yo Red Valli Vineyard New Zealand Pinot Cask
700ml 53.10%
  Ret
$185.00

After a sojourn to the South African Cape, Longrow has returned to New Zealand in 2019. This time it is to Valli Voneyards in Central Otago (big, fat, ripe pinots) for a pinot noir barrel finish for this years Red. Big peat meets an interesting cask. Eight years in a borbon cask then three years in the pinot barrique. Official notes read, "Delicate, soft and smooth. A perfect balance of pinot noir wine & Longrow. Red fruits, raspberry jam and cranberry. This is followed by burnt embers and tobacco leaf with hints of smoke.." While according to Adam Wells on Malt, "A smashing return to form for the Red. And a veritable bargain if you managed to grab one in the thirty seconds or so that it was available to buy online. 8/10." Needless to say, this gem is in short supply.

Longrow 14yo Sherry Cask Matured
700ml 57.80%
  Ret
$199.00

Now we're talking! Fully peated Longrow, fully matured in sherry casks. Official notes read, "This Longrow release was matured in refill Oloroso Sherry casks and bottled at 57.8% ABV. Nose: Very fruity! Toffee apples, pears and strawberry chocolates in the background; salted popcorn kernels, mint leaves and honey. Taste: Salty and coastal, the fruitiness continues with raisins, chocolate orange and prunes. A dryness develops with demerara sugar and digestive biscuit. Finish: Drying BBQ spices; cayenne pepper and paprika followed by cinnamon sugar, oats, pecan nuts and the typical gentle Longrow smokiness.

The long awaited third release of Springbank Distiller’s current, oldest whisky. Once again, allocations are very small and it has totally sold out overseas. Overall, it's a remarkable whisky. Remarkable for its bright, almost luminescent colour (a very non-reactive American oak cask me thinks), remarkable for its very clean, lean, lemon citrus dominated nose. Shane reckons there’s a hint of earthiness (this will be the peat) in there as well plus a good dose of creamy American oak. On the palate, it’s also remarkable for its initial feistiness but then the door opens up to let you into one seriously long, luxurious palate, where nothing is out of place. Malt, oak, alcohol and citrus fruit flavours are in complete harmony. I don’t think I’ve seen a Longrow just so pure. In a word: zesty. In another: breathtaking. Whiskyfun rates it at 92pts with the comment, "extremely high quality. I can’t see why I’d come up with another score."

Longrow 1997 14yo Burgundy Wood
700ml 56.10%
  Ret
$420.00

Here's my original notes from 2012!! "Now this has to be heaven for me...a single malt, peat and my all time favourite red, Burgundy...all in one package! This is the latest (2012) wood finish malt from J&A Mitchell. Yet to try it, so over to the the distillery... "Nose: Incredibly rich with wonderful aromas streaming out of the glass. American club soda, creamy chocolate eclairs, butter toffee popcorn, chocolate orange and cloves mix nicely with the dry smoke that is Longrow. Palate: Like a comfortable feather duvet, this whisky wraps itself around your palate enriching it with flavours of sweet treacle, creamy caramel sauce and highland toffee. It is incredibly oily yet spicy, similar to freshly ground mixed peppercorns, the smoke subtly evident throughout. Finish: Like a cloud of sweet smoke, lingering for a long while." Casks: 11 years refill bourbon, 3 years fresh burgundy hogsheads. Pic indicative only.

Longrow 7yo Gaja Barolo

POA

As Dave Lister would say, "brutal". Take a very young, highly peated, massively alcoholic Longrow and age it in used Angelo Gaja (the father of the modern Italian wine industry) French oak barriques that have been used for his famous Barolo wine (nebbiolo) and what you get is a blatantly aggressive, densely smokey and very meaty malt. And does it work? Wow does it work!! Breathtaking. 5 1/2 years in ex Bourbon oak, 1 1/2 years in ex Euro oak from Anjelo Gaja.

Brand new and what a beauty it is. Lean, clean and loaded up with peat. This whisky is intense and long with a hint of citrus fruits. As one pundit it put it, "A great entry-level offering from Longrow perfect for Islay fans looking for something a bit different." Bravo Longrow!

Springbank 10yo
700ml 46.00%
  Ret
$109.00

From the highly individual and delightfully idiosyncratic Springbank Distillers comes their flagship 2.8 distilled, lightly peated whisky 12-15ppm, Springbank. The basic 10yo is back to its very best old self: this malt is bright and pleasingly salty, ex bourbon cask matured whisky with noticeable seaside & citrus fruit characters, along with a degree of complexity with balance, malt, oak, nutmeg & cinnamon & a salty tingle on the end. Buxton's 101.

Springbank 11yo Madeira Wood
700ml 55.10%
  Ret
$360.00

The 2009 release of the famous Wood Finishes range from Springbank. And this is a very classy edition to this already venerable range. 11 years in Madeira casks accounts sweetness on the nose, with notes of butter shortbread, demerara sugar, and chocolate orange. Look a little deeper and the astounding complexity of the flavours from the Madeira casks become apparent. On the palate there's plenty of brown sugar, hot chocolate, a hint of mint and butter and the gentlest hint of peat spice. Nice one!

Springbank 12yo Cask Strength 18th Release
700ml 54.80%
  Ret
$159.00

New for 2019 and always an anticipated release and one that always sells out fast. For this year, the 18th release we have a 50:50 mix of bourbon and sherry casks with the official notes proclaiming, "Rich & Malty; milk chocolate, honey, creme brulee and caramel shortcake. Then sandal wood shavings with typical Springbank coastal notes of sea salt and brine." While on WhiskyBase HS305 opines, "Rich & Malty; milk chocolate, honey, creme brulee and caramel shortcake. Then sandal wood shavings with typical Springbank coastal notes of sea salt and brine." And then VaryingViewpoint declares, " Better than most $300+ bottles out there on shelves today."

Springbank 12yo Claret Wood
700ml 54.40%

The release and was thought to be the last in Springbank's Wood Finish range. As Whisky Notes have said : "This is a Springbank limited release, distilled in May of 1997. It was matured in refill bourbon barrels, then finished in fresh claret (Bordeaux) casks for 3 years and then another 2 years in re-charred casks (to smooth out the wine influence)." This is a very tasty, in fact a very bright Springer without too much direct wine influence. The nose is aromatic while the distinct taste of dark cherries, Springbank's saltiness and a hint of gritty wood tannins make for a mighty fine dram. Here's what Ryan Marshman said, "Find one at any cost, then consume somewhere comfortable and dark, whilst listening to some Brian Jonestown Massacre. Bliss. Score: 96"

Springbank 15yo
700ml 46.00%

$149.00

The 15yo shows a change in tack for Springbank, as this has a big dose of sherry oak going through still relatively dry and intensive, but mid palate the dark chocolate and rich toffee notes kick in. Like a storm gathering off the Kintyre coast. Dark & ominous.

Springbank 18yo

Medium to full bodied style, matured in both ex sherry (80%) and ex bourbon casks. Only 7800 bottles produced and now generally in short supply worldwide! This malt is all about precision & refinement...nothing is out of place: from the restrained nose of fruit cake with marzipan and a hint of pine smoke to the very long, lightly peated, crisply malty & fruity palate & dry smokey finish, this malt hums. And keeps on humming for quite some time. Tasting notes from the distillery as well: Nose: Full of authority. Rich and creamy at first, the nose develops to reveal vanilla, ripe fruits and marzipan before hints of sherbet, almonds and strawberries tempt you onwards to the first mouthful. Palate: A classic full-bodied dram. Thick and oily in texture with an extremely fruity and mellow taste which gives way to a sweet liquorice and aniseed flavour as it opens up. Hints of liquorice and aniseed. Finish: Sweet and chocolaty with some coconut, the finish is long and consistent with a pleasant smokey tingle.

RARE It's been a very long time between drinks as they. It really has been quite some time since the distillery has been able to release a 21yo again. I suspect there is a very intriguing story out there about why older Springers have not been released for quite some time. Before we get to this beauty a WARNING! Do not expect a copy of the old 21yo. This is a completely different beast. For me, it's dry, intensive and complex. No big, rich, sweetly raisined fruit in this dram, it's half way between being lean and sweet. As one blogger so rightly stated, "this is the modern Springbank austerity (minerals, brine & wax)" showing here. Background peat. But the flavour just lasts and lasts. More detailed notes to follow. And what's with the garish, gold lame packaging!! What were they thinking of?

Well it certainly has been a long time coming. After all the shenanigans of the past 20 years at Springbank, finally they have their flagship back. And look at the packaging!! This dram has been matured in a combination of bourbon and sherry casks before being married in port casks for the final few months of maturation. Only 1,200 bottles were released for worldwide distribution. The official notes read, "Nose: The nose is rich with a peated port influence. It’s redolent of the dunnage warehouse in which it was matured. Fruity too, but this time berries to the fore: blackberries, cranberries and strawberries. Palate: The port wine influence is perfectly balanced with flavours of sherry, plum jam, blood oranges and pink grapefruit. Finish: The finish is long, soft and elegant, with earthy, peaty and woody qualities."

Love Aberlour, love sherry malts, so the combo of the two I just couldn't go past. Here's what John Hansell at The Malt Advocate wrote, "Once again, the sherry is prominent throughout, with its lush fruit, velvety texture, and sweet demeanor. But its not cloying or sappy Rich, silky smooth, satisfying finish. Very impressive. The Aberlour 18 year olds reputation remains intact!: 91pts." And from Tom Canavan, "A lovely, confident, satisfying, after-dinner Aberlour. Sherried Speyside at its best."

Aberlour A'Bunadh Batch 61

Released in 2017, and another Abunadh that does not disappoint. SilentBeing on Whiskybase declares, "The arrival is sweeter than the nose suggests. Chewy toffee, intense orange, raisins and strawberry with plenty of dark chocolate and hints of cinnamon. Towards the finish it turns sharper and slightly bitter with notes of English breakfast tea and pickled ginger. 88/100."
