Heartwood Darkest Before Dawn 2009 8yo Lark LD559 Oloroso Sherry

Another blockbuster from Mr Duckett. This time a full strength Lark matured in Aussie Oloroso casks. Very limited.

High Spirits Littlemilll 1992 21yo Spirit Of Scotland Rome Whisky Festival
700ml 48.00%
  Ret
$730.00

It amazees me that the official botltings of Littlemill were bordering on the awful, but this unique distillery, pot still with a column rectifyer, has become something of cult malt amongst collectors.

Laphroaig 10yo Imported By Long John Aust
750ml 43.00%
  Ret
$1600.00

RARE And it most certainly is! Long John Aust operated up until the late 1980's and given that this is 750ml bottling, my feeling is that this bygone gem, probably came out to Australia in the mid 1980's or possibly even earlier? This would mean classic Laphroaig: masses of seaweed dripping peat along with the reek of TCP and iodine. Actual pic shown.

Lochside 10yo Macnab Distillers
750ml 40.00%
  Ret
$700.00

RARE Official bottling, how about that! This now closed Highlands distillery always had an attraction for me. Mainly because of its unique texture. The spirit is just like jelly: fat, glycerin, sweetly flavoured. And well, just so different. The distillery was first opened in 1957! The aim of the owners was to produce a combination of malt and grain spirit that would be co-matured for future blended releases. Actual pic shown.

Macallan 1967 18yo Sherry Oak
750ml 43.00%
  Ret
$8500.00

RARE A real ancient Macallan and the way the world is devouring these classics in the secondary market place, I was amazed at actually securing a bottle. It was bottled in 1986 and I really don't need to say this, but it has been matured fully in Oloroso sherry casks. Actual pic shown.

Macallan 1971 18yo Sherry Oak
750ml 43.00%
  Ret
$5200.00

RARE A bygone era of whisky production. One of the great, old fashioned style sherry monsters. This whisky comes from a collection that was purchased by the owner between 1988 and 1992, hence this whisky could have been distilled either in the 1970s or early 1980s. Sadly the collector disposed of the original packaging! The whisky is in good condition, however, some may have less than perfect fill levels, please refer to the pic. Aaah the tyranny of age. Pics are of the actual bottle.

Number One Drinks Co Karuizawa 1982 30yo First Fill Bourbon Cask 8497
700ml 46.00%
  Ret
$9000.00

From the enterprising No One Drinks Company, who single-handedly just about put the closed Japanese distillery, Karuizawa, onto the world stage. And didn't we take notice, as today, this distillery is now a dead set legend with it's malts now the most collectible whiskies in the world. Roll over Port Ellen, say goodnight Macallan, there is a new rising sun in the auction firmament and it's name is Karuizawa. From DRamming, "Nose: Pipe tobacco, ripe apples, vanilla, old leather, polished oak, nutmeg. Palate: Spicy apple compote, vanilla, hints of grapefruit, lapsang souchong tea, nutmeg, hints of cinnamon. Finish: Very long, fruity, spicy and minimally smoky. Overall: A fascinating mix of spice and fruit in this slightly unusual bourbon cask Karuizawa, the wood is always present but does not overwhelm the other flavours." Pic indicative only.

Another new one! Loads of toffee and ginger spice, very rich and glyceroly on the palate, loads of rich malt, oranges and coconut and raw fresh oak. Expressive, engaging. Matured in heavily toasted sherry casks made from American oak. Amazing for a three year old!! In their words, "Nose: Chocolate orange liqueur, toffee, wood (meranti, cedar), dried leaves, Seville orange, orange blossom, fruit, leather, barbequed orange, orange toffee, dark chocolate. Palate: Syrupy, woody, warm spirit, oak, orange liqueur, coconut rumballs. Finish: Cream & smoked orange, some leafy and leathery tannins and some cleansing citrus pith. Comment: lots of orange and chocolate singing in a deep register clean & classy." Pic indicative only.

It just gets better and better. This absolute youngster, 7 1/2 yo, is absolutely amazing, and believe it or not I've seen it before in its extreme infancy. Then, when it was 15 months old, I made the very firm comment that this malt was ready to go, it was so lush, fruity and loaded up with oak. But the distiller, Ian Schmidt, held his nerve and kept it in cask for another 3 or 4 years. And his judgement was so totally correct. This malt is extraordinary. The nose is just so pure, complex and balanced. Spicy (cinnamon, mixed spice) oak, raisined fruit with hints of Summer fruits and crisp malt. The nose alone is just so inviting. Then comes the taste: Rich and lush entry, slightly oily & viscous with the oak and malt being crisp. Theres that kitchen spice again with nice dose of toffee. The spirit is lively and drives these flavours down the palate. A pleasantly oaky and raisined fruit finish, that lasts and last. Extremely limited but a new benchmark for Aussie malts!
